The students, faculty and staff of the 2011 Governor?s Program for Gifted Children at McNeese will present a variety of final performances Wednesday through Friday, July 20-23.
GPGC is a seven-week residential summer enrichment program for children in grades 6-10.
Students follow an academic curriculum for the first half of the day and a fine arts elective curriculum for the second half, with courses in science, humanities, composition, comparative politics, English, psychology, chorus, art, musical, drama, physical education, critical thinking, publishing, stage tech, debate, acting and band.
Musically gifted students follow a different curriculum, with courses in music history and music theory, as well as private music instruction.
Final performances, open to the public, are coordinated and produced by GPGC students with the assistance of their faculty advisors.
The performances are on the McNeese campus in the Shearman Fine Arts Center?s Ralph Squires Hall or F.G. Bulber Auditorium.

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Two miners were missing in an Arctic Russian mine after an accident at a coal face, the owner, a unit of steelmaker Severstal, said Sunday.

Seventy-six miners working in the pit escaped immediately after the collapse Saturday evening, which was caused by a geological event, mine operator Vorkutaugol said in a statement without going into detail.

One miner was rescued a day after the collapse, Interfax news agency reported. Two more miners were unaccounted for.

The last major fatal accident occurred at the Raspadskaya mine in Kemerovo in western Siberia last year, when a methane explosion caused it to collapse, killing at least 66 people.

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egypt's former President Hosni Mubarak,hospitalised since April and due to stand trial in August, is in a coma, his lawyer said on Sunday, although the state news agency MENA cited a hospital official as denying the report.

"Mubarak suffered a sudden loss of blood pressure but quickly returned to normal again after the necessary medicines were given to him. His medical condition is stable," MENA quoted the official as saying.

Another medical source told Reuters that Mubarak, 83, occasionally slipped into a coma but his condition was stable. Mubarak's condition has been subject to frequent speculation in the Egyptian media, gaining momentum before his August 3 trial.

Protesters have been camped out in Cairo's Tahrir Square since July 8 and have protested in other Egyptian cities. Their demands have included calls for the military council now ruling Egypt to speed up Mubarak's trial.

The former president, who is hospitalized in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, faces charges of abuse of power and killing protesters.

More than 840 died in the 18 days of demonstrations that led to his ouster on February 11.

"I was informed about the sudden deterioration in Mubarak's health and I am now on my way to Sharm el-Sheikh. All that I know so far is that the president is in a full coma," Mubarak's lawyer Farid el-Deeb told Reuters. He did not give more details.

Deeb said in June Mubarak was suffering from cancer, although a government minister later appeared to play down that report.

Some Egyptians have questioned Mubarak's illness, seeing it as a ploy for the army to avoid putting on trial the decorated former air force commander who ruled Egypt for 30 years.

"The news that comes every now and then about him being in bad condition is designed to gain people's sympathy, especially now with the public demanding he comes to a jail in Cairo and face trial in Cairo, not in his hospital," political analyst and activist Hassan Nafaa said.

Mubarak had generally enjoyed good health in office. He underwent gallbladder surgery in Germany in March 2010 but he had appeared to make a full recovery. When in office, officials routinely dismissed talk of ill health including cancer reports.

BIR AYAD, Libya (Reuters) ? Heavy clashes between rebels and forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi broke out on Saturday on the front line in Libya's Western Mountains at the town of Bir Ghanam, as insurgents seek to push toward Tripoli.

Sustained gunfire and volleys of artillery could be heard from the village of Bir Ayad, 15 km (9 miles) south of Bir Ghanam. Rebels at Bir Ghanam hold the high ground on the outskirts of the town, their closest position to the capital, Tripoli, about 80 km (48 miles) away.

Ahmed, a rebel fighter in Bir Ayad, said a convoy of about 15 vehicles from Gaddafi's forces tried to approach Bir Ghanam, but the rebels fired at it and the convoy retreated after a about an hour of shooting.

Rebels in the Western Mountains have made steady progress in recent weeks after repelling assaults by Gaddafi's forces. Their target is the town of Garyan, which controls the highway south from Tripoli.

But the rebels have been hampered by divisions, ill-discipline and supply problems.

Rebel leaders won recognition as the legitimate government of Libya from the United States and other world powers on Friday in a major boost to the insurgents' campaign to oust Gaddafi.

Western nations said they also planned to increase the military pressure on Gaddafi's forces to press him to give up power after 41 years at the head of the North African state.

Recognition of the rebels, announced by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at a meeting in Turkey of the international contact group on Libya, is an important diplomatic step that could unlock billions of dollars in frozen Libyan funds.

The decision came as reports circulated Gaddafi had sent out emissaries seeking a negotiated end to the conflict, although he remains defiant in his public utterances.

In a speech on Friday evening broadcast as thousands of his loyalists rallied in street demonstrations, Gaddafi rejected international recognition of the rebels.

"Trample on those recognitions, trample on them under your feet," he told his supporters. "They are worthless."

He said he enjoyed the support of millions of Libyans who yearned for death, martyrdom and suicide.

The Istanbul conference attended by more than 30 countries and world bodies also agreed on a road map whereby Gaddafi should relinquish power and plans for Libya's transition to democracy under the rebel National Transitional Council, or TNC.

"Until an interim authority is in place, the United States will recognize the TNC as the legitimate governing authority for Libya, and we will deal with it on that basis," Clinton said.

The decision to recognize the rebels, who have been waging a five-month military campaign against Gaddafi, meant the Libyan leader had no option but to stand down, Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said.

The U.N. secretary-general's special envoy to Libya, Abdul Elah al-Khatib, will be authorized to present terms for Gaddafi to leave power, but Britain said military action against Gaddafi would be stepped up at the same time.

The political package to be offered Gaddafi will include a ceasefire to halt fighting.

In the rebels' stronghold of Misrata, the head of the local council, Khalefa Zawawi said, "What happened today at the conference in Turkey was a boost for the National Transitional Council."

British Foreign Secretary William Hague told Reuters that at the same time as al-Khatib pursued a political settlement, "the military pressure on the regime will continue to intensify."

China and Russia, which have taken a softer line toward Gaddafi, were invited to the contact group meeting for the first time, but decided not to become involved.

U.S. officials said the decision to extend formal diplomatic recognition marked an important step toward unblocking more than $34 billion in Libyan assets in the United States but cautioned it could take time to get cash flowing.

Geckos are reportedly exported to Malaysia, China and South Korea, where they are used as aphrodisiacs and as traditional medicine for asthma, AIDS, cancer, tuberculosis and impotence.

Their use as medical treatments has no scientific basis and could be dangerous because patients might not seek proper treatment for their diseases, a health department statement said.

"This is likely to aggravate their overall health and put them at greater risk," it added.

Treatments for asthma are easily available and affordable, while there are antiviral drugs to control the progress of HIV, it added.

Geckos are carnivorous, nocturnal reptiles from the family Gekkonidae that are found in tropical countries. They are known for their sticky footpads that allow them to climb vertical surfaces, including glass.

X, 40, has been housed at a state prison in Yuma, Arizona, since January, and according to the gossip site, he has broken a number of rules over the past month, including drug possession, failing or refusing a drug test, smoking in an unauthorized area, acting disrespectfully to the staff and engaging in disorderly or disruptive conduct. Of the seven alleged disciplinary infractions since January, four have come since June 12, with two more in April for alleged drug possession and disorderly conduct, and another in January for unauthorized smoking.

Due to his latest infractions, the troubled rapper — who had been slated to be released Wednesday — will spend at least another week in prison, according to the Associated Press. His new release date is July 19. He was sent back to prison in December for a probation violation after an arrest in November for failing to check in with his probation officer.

Around December 20, X was reportedly transferred to a mental-health unit after the judge in his case described him as having an "undiagnosed mental condition," before ordering him back to prison for one year.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to make only minor changes to his cabinet on Tuesday, counting on veteran finance and interior ministers to help battle policy paralysis and rampant corruption in Asia's third-largest economy.

Avoiding a major reshuffle of the Congress party-led coalition government is likely to disappoint investors and those in civil society who had hoped for an injection of fresh blood to tackle poor governance, high inflation and economic reforms.

Congress party sources said that the finance, interior, foreign and defence ministers were expected to stay put.

"This is really an indication of a government that has become indecisive and that doesn't know what is in its best interest," said M.J. Akbar, editor of news magazine India Today.

"If there is a deadlock at the top then the deadlock can only be loosened by changes at the top...more of the same isn't going to solve the problem."

Halfway through his second term, Singh's reformist image has been hit by multi-billion dollar corruption scandals, weak leadership, infighting and a sense of complacency by many politicians focused more on enjoying the fruits of power.

Many had hoped Singh would use a cabinet revamp he announced earlier this year to try to regain the initiative. It is his second attempt this year after a reshuffle in January was criticised for only moving tainted ministers to new portfolios.

Singh is expected to tweak the line-up to accommodate coalition partners' wishes and fill posts made vacant when the former telecoms minister was arrested and his party colleague, the textile minister resigned -- both over graft allegations.

PARTY POLITICS

Government survival is so far not under threat. The opposition is weak and does not want a snap general election halfway through Singh's second term, this is one reason many say Singh is reluctant to push for a major cabinet reshuffle now.

"From a reforms point of view, I don't think it's going to make much of an impact," said a senior government source.

Congress is instead more concerned with politics aimed at staying in power -- like a popular but expensive scheme to provide jobs for the rural poor -- while Singh and some of his ministers and officials are seen as more reform oriented.

Congress is preparing its election campaign in the state of Uttar Pradesh next year -- a vote that will set the stage for a 2014 general election that could usher family scion Rahul Gandhi into the national race.

"Singh has an image problem but he has to take the call if he wants to change this now, in six months or a year down the road," said Sanjay Baru, Singh's media adviser in 2004 to 2008.

Bills to overhaul land acquisition policy, an archaic taxation system and to liberalise foreign direct investment rules have suffered as the government drifts, dampening market performance and spooking investors.

There are ominous signs, from weaker car sales to a dip in steel imports and FDI, that have coincided with global worries that emerging markets could soon hit a financial bump.

Given its 1.2 billion population and vast chunks of the economy being undeveloped, foreign and local investors view India as a hot investment destination in the long term, despite facing some short-term challenges.
