EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) — Egyptian security officials say suspected Islamic militants in a car have shot dead a policeman as he was walking to work in a coastal Sinai city.
Thursday's drive-by shooting in el-Arish is the latest attack by Islamic militants on Egyptian military and security forces in the turbulent northern part of the Sinai Peninsula, which borders Israel and the Gaza Strip.
The officials say the slain 30-year-old Kamel Kareem was a member of a police force tasked with the protection of state-owned electricity facilities. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
Attacks on army and police in Sinai have dramatically grown in frequency since the July 3 ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. Some of the militants there have al-Qaida links.
