Days after Afghanistan massacre, suspect unnamed

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) ? The U.S. serviceman suspected in the massacre of more than a dozen Afghan civilians is a 38-year-old father of two who served three tours in Iraq and is based in Washington state. Still, days after the slayings, the military has kept under wraps one of the most salient details ? his name.

Military officials said it was military policy not to release the name until charges are filed. But military experts said this case seems unusual.

"This is unprecedented in my experience," said Eugene Fidell, who teaches military law at Yale University. "It's very strange."

Fidell speculated that the military was focused on ensuring the safety of the soldier's family.

Information has also been limited inside the military. Jill Barber, a wife of a staff sergeant in the same battalion as the suspect, said she learned of the Sunday shooting only from news coverage. She said her husband wasn't allowed to call her for more than a day after the shooting and that soldiers can get in trouble for talking about it.

"They shut everything down over there," Barber, of Yelm, about 60 miles south of Seattle, said Monday. "I didn't even find out about it from him. They're not allowed to say anything."

It's typical for the military to put stringent controls on communication in the aftermath of deaths or injuries, including the shutdown of Internet and telephone access on a combat zone base, often for 24 hours. If a soldier is wounded but his injuries are not life-threatening, military officials will allow him or her to call next of kin on a satellite phone, but they are instructed not to mention others having been hurt or killed ? and an officer or an NCO stands at the bedside to make sure that rule is followed.

Jeffrey Addicott, who previously served as the senior legal adviser to the U.S. Army's Special Forces, said the military has increasingly used the shutdown of communications to control information. He said soldiers who are aware of the identity of the suspect likely have orders from superiors not to speak about it and have probably had their electronic devices confiscated so nothing leaks out.

Addicott said he can't think of any other case where a name has been held back for this long, but he thinks it may be necessary in this case to help contain any backlash. He fears that extremists may try to seek revenge for the killings, perhaps by targeting the soldier's family.

"I think it's probably a good thing that we don't have to release his name," Addicott said.

In this instance, military officials haven't even officially confirmed that the soldier was based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Seattle. That information came from sources who spoke to The Associated Press and other media organizations and spoke only on condition of anonymity. Base spokesman Joe Piek referred any questions to military leaders in Afghanistan.

The suspect was flown out of Afghanistan on Wednesday evening to what officials describe as a pretrial confinement facility. Military leaders haven't publicly discussed details about the suspect, though officials have anonymously described him as a 38-year-old father of two who has been in the military for 11 years. He's served three tours in Iraq and began his first deployment to Afghanistan in December.

The soldier is with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. He was attached to Camp Belambai, home to a village stability force that pairs special operations troops with villagers to help provide neighborhood security.

Authorities said the suspect attacked two small villages close to his base in southern Kandahar province. An Afghan official said he was shown a surveillance video of the soldier returning to his base, laying down his weapon and raising his arms in surrender.

There have been other circumstances where military officials have taken their time in releasing information about soldier suspects, such as in the deliberate thrill killings of three Afghan civilians during patrols by another Lewis-McChord based unit in 2010.

Just after the last of those killings, in May of that year, a whistleblower told Army investigators about the unjustified killings. The officers quickly identified which killings the whistleblower was talking about, and within days they had arrested a dozen soldiers ? five for potential involvement in the deaths, and the rest for a series of other misdeeds, including taking body parts from the dead and drug use.

Vague word of the arrests leaked out about two weeks later. The Army released the name of one of the central figures in the case, Jeremy Morlock, in early June after he had been charged with murder. It did not release the other names and charges until mid-June.

While that case was largely unknown until the military released information, this week's case was immediately known across the globe.

Patio Decorating Ideas | Tuscan Garden Theme

A traditional Tuscan patio or courtyard uses lots of natural elements as its' base. Stone, water, wood, flowers, vines, -- all these elements are present in Tuscan decorating.

Color schemes for this style dictate an earth tone, warm palette -- think gold, copper, orange, yellow, burgundy and creams. Complementary colors for your walls, floors and other architectural features could include browns, blacks, bronzes and creams, blues, and greens.?

Think of the elements of Tuscany and draw from those colors: blues like the oceans, greens like the grapes, foliage and trees, deep yellow and golds like the Tuscan sun.?

"Reluctant heiress" jewels set for $10 million auction

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Just three months after its record-smashing sale of Elizabeth Taylor's renowned jewels, Christie's has nabbed another storied collection belonging to "reluctant heiress" Huguette Clark which is poised to take in more than $10 million.

Clark, who died last year at age 104, was heir to a copper, timber and railroad fortune and had no children. Married once briefly, she shunned the social limelight and trappings of wealth, preferring to spend time with her doll collection that was worth millions.

As such, she earned the nickname "the reluctant heiress," eschewing lavish homes in New York and California, choosing instead to live out her years in hospitals.

Christie's said on Tuesday it would sell 17 pieces of Clark's jewels, led by an extremely rare 9-carat pink diamond ring and a 20-carat D-color diamond ring, estimated to sell for about $7 million and $2.5 million, respectively, when they are auctioned in New York on April 17.

"This is truly a fairytale collection," said Rahul Kadakia, Christie's Americas head of jewelry, in announcing the sale.

Kadakia said it was an extraordinary moment "opening the vault to find this treasure trove of period jewels from the best French houses of the early 1900s."

"The iconic Art Deco design and exceptional craftsmanship of these meticulously preserved jewels are emblematic of the great Gilded Age in American history," he added.

The auction house said Clark's collection was believed to have been stored in a bank vault since the 1940s and includes signed Art Deco Cartier, Dreicer & Co. and Tiffany & Co. jewels.

In December, Christie's broke records with a series of auctions of Taylor's storied jewelry collection which took in more than $135 million.

Clark's estate was valued at about $400 million when she died, according to the law firm Holland & Knight.

Her will stipulated the establishment of a foundation to promote and foster the arts, to be called the Bellosguardo Foundation after her 24-acre oceanfront home in Santa Barbara.

She had not been to the home since 1963 when her mother died, but kept it well-maintained for nearly 50 years. The estate, estimated to be worth over $100 million, will become a museum to house her collection of books, musical instruments, art that includes paintings by Renoir and other fine objects.

Clark left nothing to any members of her family, but bequeathed millions to a nurse assigned to her in 1991 who became Clark's closest companion. The will is being contested.

After her father's death in 1925, Clark and her mother moved to an Italian palazzo-style residence on Fifth Ave., where they maintained three apartments overlooking Central Park.

Christie's International Real Estate, in partnership with Brown Harris Stevens, said on Tuesday that the three properties were hitting the market. The reported asking prices are $12 million, $19 million and $24 million.

New app matches colorectal cancer patients with treatment options ...

Wells Messersmith, MD, co-leader of the Developmental Therapeutics Program at the University of Colorado Cancer Center

In partnership with the American Society of Clinical Oncology including University of Colorado Cancer Center researchers, and the College of American Pathologists, Palo Alto tech company CollabRx recently released an app that matches the genetics, disease history and demographics of colorectal cancer patients to drug and clinical trial treatment options.

?This online and freely accessible tool will support and enable patient empowerment, engagement and participation in discussing and creating a personalized cancer treatment plan that leverages the unique aspects of a patient?s medical history and tumor genetic profile whenever possible,? said Wells Messersmith, MD, co-leader of the Developmental Therapeutics Program at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, and a clinical advisor to the Therapy Finder ? Colorectal Cancer app.

Colorectal cancer is the 3rd most common human malignancy and the 3rd leading cause for cancer-related deaths for both men and women in the western world. It affects approximately 150,000 individuals each year in the United States alone.

Recent colorectal cancer research has identified biomarkers that allow doctors to define the cancer?s subtype. Taking into account these genetic mutation biomarkers as well as the cancer?s stage, treatment history, and sites of metastasis, the app provides personalized therapy-related options based on peer-reviewed medical and scientific literature; for example, drug recommendations, suggestions for further diagnostics, and relevant clinical trials

Messersmith and the app designers hope patients and physicians will use the information presented to stimulate discussion of optimal treatment-related choices.
