UMass and UConn both made strides on Saturday, but neither could pick up the win. Boston College was off this weekend.
Sep 23, 2012 - Call it a learning experience. Nether the UMass Minutemen (0-4) or UConn Huskies (2-2) were able to come out on the winning end during Saturday's full slate of college football games, but that doesn't mean the day was a wash. Progress was made all around, and sometimes that's all you can hope for.
UMass was defeated my the Miami (Ohio) Red Hawks, 27-16, but continued its upward offense trend. The Minutemen nearly amassed 500 yards of offense (471 to be exact) and senior running back Michael Cox scampered for 188 yards and two scores, and the 16 points marked the highest margin of UMass' brief FBS tenure. After being blanked by UConn in Week 1, UMass has scored more points each week (six in Week 2, 13 in Week 3 and now 16 in Week 4). When you have a team making the jump to FBS from FCS, you simply can't expect immediate success, so what we've seen from the Minutemen so far is normal, and encouraging. UMass is now 0-4 overall.
UConn, meanwhile, couldn't get the win against Western Michigan, losing 30-24, but it also displayed some encouraging signs, specifically from quarterback Chandler Whitmer. After three straight weeks without a touchdown pass (not to mention five interceptions), Whitmer found the end zone three times, his first three FBS touchdowns, and threw for 333 yards. Whitmer's touchdown with less than a minute to go brought the Huskies within a score, but they couldn't come any closer. While he showed definite progress, Whitmer still had some mishaps, including a fumble that resulted in a touchdown and one interception. UConn fell to 2-2 overall after the loss.
Boston College was off this weekend, but the Eagles return to action next Saturday against the ACC rival Clemson Tigers. Considering how BC fared last weekend, perhaps this was a blessing.
