Packers chase perfection, Colts try to avoid it (AP)

There is perfection ? what the Green Bay Packers are chasing.

And then there is perfection ? what the Indianapolis Colts are trying to avoid.

Neither team wants to broach the subject, although both are very aware it's out there.

"I think we're a long way from there," Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. "If we're fortunate enough to be still undefeated after 14 or 15 games, maybe we can start talking about what you were talking about."

What the rest of the nation is talking about: 16-0. And, in the Colts' case, 0-16.

""I think all the losses are tough. At this point, we're just trying find a way to get a win," Colts safety Antoine Bethea said. " We've got five games left now, so we got to keep rallying and stick together."

The Packers have been sticking it to just about everyone all season. They lead the NFL in points (382, 34.7 per game), and are near or at the lead in many other offensive categories. Rodgers is having the lights-out sort of season that Tom Brady had in leading the Patriots to their perfect regular season in 2007.

Indeed, there are several similarities between these Packers and those Patriots, including a heavy concentration on passing, a nice mix of veterans and youngsters, and a well-established coaching staff with a strong ability to adapt during games.

But there are many differences, starting with Rodgers' corps of receivers, which is deeper than what Brady enjoyed. Sure, Brady had stars in Randy Moss and Wes Welker, but beyond that his targets usually were Donte' Stallworth, Jabar Gaffney, tight end Benjamin Watson and running back Kevin Faulk. Moss had a record 23 TD receptions and Welker grabbed 112 passes.

While nobody on these Packers figures to produce such numbers, Rodgers throws to as many as 10 receivers in a game, and double-covering any of them tends to create mismatches elsewhere, particularly with TE Jermichael Finley, unlike Watson a deep threat, and the emerging Jordy Nelson.

New England also had a better offensive line than the Packers can put together, and its defense was stingier than Green Bay's.

Perhaps most notable is how the Patriots blew out teams in the first eight weeks, then were tested severely in the second half of the 2007 schedule, with four victories by four points or less. Thus far, the Packers have only two lopsided wins.

That actually might help Green Bay, toughen it for the postseason grind. Remember that the Patriots did not win the NFL title that season, losing to the Giants in the Super Bowl ? and being held to a season-low 14 points.

To their credit, the Packers aren't totally ignoring the perfection chatter.

"Yeah, they don't mind it," coach Mike McCarthy said. "You guys don't like my same message, but it kind of works for us. I don't feel any pressure by it. It's a great place to be. It's nice to be undefeated and to be part of those conversations. Anybody would like to be part of those conversations.

"But really, not to be cliche, it's about the next game. Because if you don't get No. 12, that talk's over. We won't shy away from the talk if we get to that, but it's a hypothetical situation."

The reality is the Packers will be favored in their remaining five games, three at home. They visit the Giants on Sunday in what some think will be their toughest test. They also get the Raiders at home, visit the Chiefs, then finish with consecutive divisional games at Lambeau Field against the Bears and Lions.

It is not an easy path, and Green Bay fully will deserve the 16-0 mark if it gets there.

Just as Indianapolis will deserve matching the ignominious 0-16 Detroit compiled in 2008. Yes, the Mannings, uh, Colts have a monstrous excuse for flopping: Peyton Manning's neck surgery and subsequent sidelining, something they clearly were ill-prepared to deal with.

But 0-11? And with some losses against the dregs of the league: Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Jacksonville and, on Sunday, Carolina ? perhaps their best opportunity to get off this schneid?

The old saw that others will step up for the team when a star goes down certainly has not applied in Indy. Instead of stepping up, just about everyone from Reggie Wayne to Dallas Clark to Dwight Freeney have fallen down. And they haven't been able to get up as the losses mount.

Indianapolis is near the bottom in scoring, various offensive and defensive statistics, turnover differential and, naturally, wins.

Curtis Painter was not ready to be a starting quarterback, bringing Kerry Collins out of a short retirement backfired, injuries have plagued the roster, and coach Jim Caldwell and his staff have been at, well, a loss on how to fix anything.

Not that the Colts are giving up, even with New England, Baltimore, Tennessee and Houston, a combined 30-14, on the schedule before they finish with at the Jaguars. Tight end Jacob Tamme is searching for silver-and-blue linings, hoping for a carry-over from a decent second half against Carolina.

As if decent will get it done with the imposing schedule that's ahead.

"There toward the end, those last few drives, we didn't think there was any way we'd be stopped. So I think that's a positive thing," Tamme said. "I think the attitude on the field and in the huddle was a positive thing, and something to grab ahold of and take going forward. The way that things have gone so far this year, that's not easy to do, to keep believing in each other, and we do despite the fact that we haven't done what we want to do this year so far."

(AP) ? It became clear that LaMichael James wasn't too badly hurt when he and Oregon teammate Kenjon Barner danced on the sidelines before the start of the fourth quarter.

The junior duo bopped to "Shout!" with the rest of the crowd at Autzen Stadium as the No. 9 Ducks cruised to a 49-21 victory over Oregon State in the Civil War rivalry game to clinch the Pac-12 North and a spot in the league's first championship game.

Earlier in the quarter, James ? who ran for 142 yards and the game's first touchdown ? left with an injured left elbow.

"It's good," he said, vigorously flexing his elbow after the game. "I could've played."

The demonstration was assurance that he'd be ready next Friday night when Oregon (10-2, 8-1 Pac-12) host UCLA with a chance to win a third straight conference title and a spot in the Rose Bowl.

Quarterback Darron Thomas, who threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns, said a victory in the Civil War was one of the goals Oregon set at the start of the season. The Ducks have won the last four in the 115-game history of the rivalry.

"This was a big game for the team and we wanted to win it for Eugene," Thomas said. "The win wasn't just for us, it was for the fans."

The Beavers (3-9, 3-6) aren't going to a bowl game for the second straight season.

"I like this team for the fact that they kept working. It didn't amount to much today considering the result of the game, but I think the fact that they certainly have improved, they kept a good attitude," Oregon State coach Mike Riley said. "I think it's a tribute to the group of seniors that we have and I think it bodes well for the guys that are all coming back to this team when we get started in January. That's what we have to look forward to."

James, a Heisman finalist last season, entered the game as the nation's top rusher with an average of 142.78 yards per game. He was hurt midway through the third when he was hit by Oregon State linebacker Tony Wilson.

The junior running back was already wearing a brace on his right elbow, which he dislocated on Oct. 6 against California. He missed two games because of that injury.

Oregon looked as if it was making a strong bid for a spot in the BCS championship game until last weekend, when the Ducks fell to Southern California 38-35. But they tried bounced back easily against Oregon State.

Versatile freshman De'Anthony Thomas rushed for 71 yards and had 10 catches for 86 yards and a score. Barner ran for 64 yards and a touchdown, and also caught a scoring pass.

"I feel like we played real well," said De'Anthony Thomas, who finished with 197 all-purpose yards. "I can't wait to play next week. We're gonna play even better."

Redshirt freshman Sean Mannion threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns for the Beavers. But Oregon State struggled on the ground with just 16 yards rushing, compared to Oregon's 365.

James scored early on a 1-yard run, becoming Oregon's all-time leading scorer with 324 points.

The Beavers tied it at 7 when Jovan Stevenson grabbed a swing pass from Mannion and weaved his way downfield for a touchdown early in the second quarter.

"I don't know if I was nervous, more like excited," Mannion said. "You get to play in a rivalry and after the first play, it's just playing football. That's all there is to it."

Before the half Oregon scored on Darron Thomas' 16-yard pass to David Paulson and his 8-yard pass to De'Anthony Thomas.

Darron Thomas hit Barner with another 16-yard TD just before halftime to make it 28-7. Barner ran a yard for another score in the third quarter, and Thomas connected with freshman Colt Lyerla for a 39-yard touchdown early in the fourth.

Mannion threw two TDs in the fourth quarter to Kevin Cummings (19 yards) and Brandin Cooks (23 yards).

Oregon State flanker James Rodgers did not suit up because of a left ankle injury. It was to be the final game of a college career with some great moments and a severe injury.

In the 2007 Civil War, Rodgers scored on a fly sweep in overtime to give the Beavers a 38-31 victory at Autzen Stadium. Oregon State has not defeated their in-state rival since then.

"I told him I did not think he looked good and that I didn't think he should play," said Riley, who made the call after watching Rodgers in pregame warmups. "It's obviously tough, but ... being his last game also wouldn't have been any good to put him at risk. So I didn't think it was wise."

Rodgers was a fifth-year senior this season coming off a pair of knee surgeries.

Oregon linebacker Dewitt Stuckey (shoulder) and end Dion Jordan (ankle) both played against Oregon State after leaving with injuries against USC.

Last weekend's loss to USC at Autzen Stadium snapped a 21-game winning streak at home and a 19-game win streak in conference games. The Ducks haven't lost two straight at home since 2002.

"I felt like we shouldn't have lost that game," De'Anthony Thomas said. "But those things happen. Now we gotta get back and win the Pac-12 championship."

(AP) ? Browns running back Peyton Hillis is ready to make his return after missing six straight games with a hamstring injury.

Hillis practiced Friday for the first time since Nov. 4 and may play on Sunday at Cincinnati. Hillis first got hurt on Oct. 16 in Oakland and was poised to return three weeks ago before he aggravated the hamstring during practice. Earlier this week, Browns coach Pat Shurmur ruled Hillis out for this week's game, but Hillis is now a game-time decision against the Bengals.

Hillis' second season with the Browns has been loaded with drama. He expressed disappointment at not getting a contract extension and missed one game with strep throat on the advice of his agent.

Sharp elbows: Shoppers scuffle on Black Friday (AP)

A shopper in Los Angeles pepper-sprayed her competition for an Xbox and scuffles broke out elsewhere around the U.S. as bargain-hunters crowded stores in an earlier-than-usual start to the madness known as Black Friday.

For the first time, chains such as Target, Best Buy and Kohl's opened their doors at midnight on the most anticipated shopping day of the year. Toys R Us opened for the second straight year on Thanksgiving itself. And some shoppers arrived with sharp elbows.

Near Muskegon, Mich., a teenage girl was knocked down and stepped on several times after getting caught in the rush to a sale in the electronics department at a Walmart. She suffered minor injuries.

On Thanksgiving night, a Walmart in Los Angeles brought out a crate of discounted Xboxes, and as a crowd waited for the video game players to be unwrapped, a woman fired pepper spray at the other shoppers "in order to get an advantage," police said.

Ten people suffered cuts and bruises in the chaos, and 10 others had minor injuries from the spray, authorities said. The woman got away in the confusion, and it was not immediately clear whether she got an Xbox.

On Friday morning, police said, two women were injured and a man was charged after a fight broke out at an upstate New York Walmart. A man was arrested in a scuffle at a jewelry counter at a Walmart in Kissimmee, Fla.

Wal-Mart Stores, the nation's biggest retailer, has taken steps in recent years to control its Black Friday crowds following the 2008 death of one of its workers in a stampede of shoppers. This year, it staggered its door-buster deals instead of offering them all at once.

Wal-Mart spokesman Greg Rossiter said Black Friday was safe at most of its nearly 4,000 U.S., but there were "a few unfortunate incidents."

The incidents were attributed to two converging Black Friday trends: Crowds are getting bigger as stores open earlier and stay open later. At the same time, cash-strapped shoppers are competing for deals on a small number of gifts that everybody wants ? tablet computers, TVs and game consoles like Xbox, Nintendo 3S and Wii.

That's a shift from years past, when there was a wider range of must-have items.

"The more the people, the more the occurrences," said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst with market research firm The NPD Group.

A record number of shoppers are expected this weekend to take advantage of discounts of up to 70 percent. For three days starting on Black Friday, 152 million people are expected to shop, either online or in stores, an increase of about 10 percent from last year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Thanksgiving weekend, particularly Black Friday, is huge for retailers. Over the past six years, Black Friday was the biggest sales day of the year, and it is expected to keep that crown this year, though shoppers seem to be procrastinating more every year, and the fate of the holiday season is increasingly coming down to the last few days before Christmas.

Last year, the Thanksgiving shopping weekend accounted for 12.1 percent of overall holiday sales, according to ShopperTrak, a research firm. Black Friday made up about half of that.

ShopperTrak is expected to release sales data on Saturday on how Black Friday fared, but a better picture will emerge when major retailers report their November sales figures next Thursday.

In addition to opening earlier than usual this year, some stores offered to match their competitors' prices, rolled out layaway programs or offered more door-buster deals than last year.

Emmanuel Merced and his brother showed up at a Best Buy in New York at 3 p.m. on Wednesday so they could be the first in line when it opened at midnight Thursday to grab a Sharp 42-inch TV for $199.99, a PlayStation 3 with games for $199.99 and wireless headphones for $30.

Merced said he likes camping out for Black Friday and figured he saved 50 percent.

"I like the experience of it," said Merced, who plans to spend $3,000 to $4,000 on gifts this season.

To be sure, not every place was full on Black Friday. With so many major stores opening at midnight, many people stayed up late and shopped early. Then there were those who stuck to their normal routine of going to stores that opened later Friday morning. That left a lull in the hours just before and after daybreak.

At a Target on Chicago's North Side, crowds were light four hours after the store opened at midnight. And door-buster deals, including the typically quick-to-sell-out TVs and game systems, remained piled up in their boxes. Shoppers pushed carts through mostly empty aisles while thumbing through circulars, and employees in Santa hats roamed the store. There was no Christmas music ? or any music ? playing.

Rebecca Carter, a graduate assistant, began Black Friday shopping at 11 p.m. on Thursday and left Target around 4 a.m. carrying a bag full of pillows. Carter said the crowds were noticeably lighter this year as she and a friend picked up a 32-inch TV for $180 and a laptop for $198, along with toys and pajamas.

"It's quiet," she said. "It was shocking."

Melody Snyder of Vancouver, Wash., had braced herself for anarchy when she got to Walmart at 6 a.m. but was pleasantly surprised when she pulled into the parking lot.

"I got here and thought, `Where is everyone?'" said Snyder, who found some Barbies and other toys sold out but was still able to find gifts for her three kids.

Packers: Suh explanation is 'crap'

Ryan Mathews, Nick RoachAP

We handle the biggest injury news all day in the rumor mill.?

The rest goes right here, in America?s most popular injury segment that always listens to the National Anthem.

1. Kevin Kolb is officially questionable after being limited in practice all week with his toe injury. ?We won?t know his status until gametime, but signs are pointing towards Kolb playing.

2. The Rams? two best defenders are questionable.?Linebacker James Laurinaitis (foot) and defensive end Chris Long (ankle) practiced in a limited fashion during the week, so they should play.

3. The Bills have a sadly big list of starters that are out this week. Some of the players are already on injured reserve, but we?ll reprint here: Running back?Fred Jackson (fibula), wideout Donald Jones (ankle), kicker Rian Lindell (shoulder), cornerback Terrence McGee (knee), and safety George Wilson (neck) are out. ?Backup wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt (shoulder) is also out.

4. The Jets are healthy, with the exception of kick returner?Jeremy Kerley (knee) and running back LaDainian Tomlinson (knee). Both are questionable, but they didn?t practice all week.

5. Tight end Dallas Clark (fibula) is out once again. Running back Joseph Addai (hamstring) should be back after practicing fully all week.

6. The Raiders will be without?wide receiver Jacoby Ford (foot), running back Darren McFadden (foot), and defensive end Jarvis Moss (hamstring). ?Half the team is questionable, including two players that didn?t practice all week: running back?Taiwan Jones (hamstring) and wide receiver Denarius Moore (foot).

7. A few extra days off did the Broncos some good. The entire active roster should be available to face San Diego.

8. The Chargers got some good news on Friday. Running back Ryan Mathews (knee) is probable despite missing practice Thursday, and their best pass rusher Shaun Phillips (foot) was upgraded to questionable this week.

The bad news:?Defensive end Luis Castillo (tibia), wideout Malcom Floyd (hip), and tackle Marcus McNeill (neck) are all still out. Two other guards are doubtful. The offensive line is in bad shape.

9. Andre Johnson (hamstring) is officially probable as he returns from his lengthy injury. ?He should be happy about his matchup with Jacksonville because . . .

10. The Jaguars defense is banged up. Cornerback Derek Cox went on injured reserve Friday. Fellow starter Rashean Mathis is already there. Defensive line starters?Terrance Knighton (ankle) and Matt Roth (concussion) are both out.

11. The Falcons will be short in the secondary. Luckily, they are playing the Vikings. ?Cornerback Kelvin Hayden (toe) is out and cornerback Brent Grimes (knee)?is questionable despite not practicing all week.

12. Patriots wideout?Chad Ochocinco (hamstring) is officially questionable after missing practice Friday. There are nine other Patriots that are questionable, but they all practiced in a limited fashion during the week. Linebacker Brandon Spikes (knee) remains out.

13. Redskins receiver Santana Moss (hand) is back in the mix. He?s probable.

14. The Steelers list linebacker?LaMarr Woodley (hamstring) as questionable, but there is doubt locally that he?ll suit up.

Pakistan's envoy to U.S. quits in coup memo controversy (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) ? Pakistan's ambassador to the United States resigned on Tuesday, days after a Pakistani-American businessman said the envoy was behind a controversial memo that accused the Pakistani military of plotting a coup in May.

Envoy Husain Haqqani said on his Twitter account had sent his resignation to the prime minister. State television said his resignation had been accepted.

"I have much to contribute to building a new Pakistan free of bigotry & intolerance," Haqqani said on Twitter. "Will focus energies on that."

Haqqani's resignation follows a meeting with Pakistan President Asif Zardari, the nation's powerful army chief and its intelligence head.

A spokesman for the prime minister's office said Haqqani was asked to resign and there would be an investigation into the memo.

Haqqani is close to Zardari but estranged from Pakistan's military.

He became entangled in controversy after the appearance of a column in the Financial Times. In that column, businessman Mansoor Ijaz said he delivered a memo to the Pentagon containing a plea for U.S. help to stave off a military coup in the days after the May 2 U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.

Yemen's Saleh signs deal to give up power (Reuters)

RIYADH (Reuters) ? Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh signed a deal on Wednesday under which he will step down after 33 years in power and 10 months of protests against his rule that brought the country to the brink of civil war.

Celebrations erupted in the capital Sanaa as Saleh inked the agreement that made him the fourth leader to be forced from power in 10 months of mass protests that have swept the Arab world. Yemenis danced in the streets, set off fireworks and waved flags as Saleh finally agreed to step down.

Under the agreement, signed with opposition leaders at a ceremony hosted by Saudi King Abdullah at the royal palace in Riyadh, Saleh will immediately transfer his powers to his deputy, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. In return he will retain the title of president until a new head of state is elected.

"I declare the turning of a new page in the history of Yemen," Saudi King Abdullah said in a brief statement before the signing ceremony, also attended by Crown Prince Nayef.

"Saudi Arabia will remain the best supporter for Yemen," the king added.

Hadi would form a new government with the opposition and call an early presidential election within three months.

"This is as honorable an exit as he (Saleh) can get, considering the circumstances," said Ghanem Nusseibeh, a London-based analyst. "But the key thing is how the deal will be implemented and if the coalition government will be strong enough to take charge of the whole country," he added.

The United States and the European Union hailed the accord.

"This represents an important step forward for the Yemeni people, who deserve the opportunity to determine their own future," President Barack Obama said in a statement.

The Pentagon said the United States and Yemen would continue to work together against militants. "Despite the political instability in Yemen, we have been able to preserve important counter-terrorism relationships with that country."

In Brussels, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said Saleh's signing of the deal should open the way to national reconciliation and a transition to democracy.

"The agreement is only the beginning, but it is a very important beginning. It allows the Yemeni people the much needed hope that their country can turn a page in its history and embrace a new future," she said in a statement.

Saudi state television broadcast live the signing ceremony, where Saleh was shown chatting and sipping traditional coffee with King Abdullah. Saleh spent three months in Riyadh undergoing treatment following an assassination attempt in June.

The attempt on Saleh's life came after he ducked out of the deal, which ushered in street battles that devastated parts of his capital Sanaa.

The 69-year-old leader, who has ruled Yemen since 1978, asked Saudi Arabia and members of the U.N. Security Council to ensure the implementation of the accord, brokered by Yemen's Gulf Arab neighbors.

"We aspire with confidence to the brothers in Saudi Arabia ... to review, help and oversee the implementation of the accord and the operational mechanism," he said.

MONTHS OF BLOODSTAINED PROTESTS

Hundreds of people have been killed during months of protests seeking Saleh's ouster. The political deadlock has reignited simmering conflicts with separatists and militants, raising fears that Yemen's al Qaeda wing could take a foothold on the borders of Saudi Arabia, the world's top oil exporter.

Details of the power transfer deal -- drawn up by Yemen's richer neighbors in the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) earlier this year, and thwarted by Saleh on three separate occasions -- were hammered out by U.N. envoy Jamal Benomar, with support from U.S. and European diplomats.

"This is a very good day for Yemen and we hope it provides the framework for a reform process during the transition that will lead to...free and fair elections," he told Reuters at the signing ceremony.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters in New York that Saleh had told him in a telephone conversation on Tuesday that he intended to "come to New York to take medical treatment immediately after signing this agreement."

A Yemeni official had said on Tuesday that the accord was facing opposition from some senior politicians in Saleh's General People's Congress (GPC).

Saudi fears about chaos in Yemen are shared by Washington, which regards the country as a front line against al Qaeda and long backed Saleh as a key to its campaign against Islamist militants.

PROTESTERS DENOUNCE DEAL "WITHIN THE REGIME"

The deal to nudge him from power was denounced by some of the youth protesters who have emerged as a presence in Yemen's politics, and regard the parties that negotiated his exit partners in the crimes of which they accuse Saleh.

"We will remain on the streets until our demands are met," activist Samia al-Aghbari told Reuters. "Saleh's crimes won't end with time, so we will pursue him and all the killers."

But others welcomed the deal as a first victory of their uprising.

"This is a great victory," Badr Ali Ahmed, an activist at Change Square, said. "We have achieved one of the goals of the revolution, which is to bring down the head of the regime, and God willing we will achieve the rest."

Hamdan al-Haqab, a field organizer, said: "We were not part of this initiative, but since it happened, we consider it to be the first achievement of the revolution ... We will continue to achieve all our goals."

A Yemeni official said that renegade general Ali Mohsen, a longtime Saleh ally who turned on him after protests began, and Sadeq al-Ahmar, a tribal notable who also threw his weight against Saleh, could try to block the deal which excludes them.

Those figures, along with Saleh's son and a nephew who commands a key paramilitary unit, form a balance of forces on the ground that analysts say none is likely to tip, making a political resolution the only way out of Yemen's deadlock.

Witnesses said Ahmar fighters and Saleh forces traded shelling in the Soufan and al-Hasaba neighborhoods in Sanaa, where the tribal chief lives, and that sounds of explosions could be heard from a distance.

There were no reports of casualties. The area was the scene of heavy clashes earlier this year, where scores of people from both sides died.

China opposes expanded sanctions against Iran (AP)

BEIJING ? China said Wednesday it opposed unilateral and expanded sanctions against Iran, such as those announced by several Western countries aimed at pressuring Tehran to halt its suspected nuclear weapons program.

"China is always against unilateral sanctions against Iran, let alone the expansion of such sanctions," Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said at a regular briefing.

On Monday, the U.S., Britain and Canada announced more sanctions intended to isolate Iran's economy, based on International Atomic Energy Agency suspicions that Iran is secretly working to develop nuclear weapons.

But countries such as China and Russia have far greater economic investments in Iran, whose energy exports have helped it shrug off serious harm from four rounds of U.N. sanctions since 2006 and other penalties applied by individual countries and the European Union.

"We believe pressuring and sanctions cannot fundamentally solve the Iranian issue, but will complicate the issue. Ratched-up confrontation is not conducive to the region's peace and stability," Liu said, adding that the parties involved "should strengthen dialogue and cooperation."

Bombs defused near Philippine massacre site (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? Authorities in the restive southern Philippines defused five roadside bombs near the site of a 2009 massacre Wednesday, the day relatives of the 57 victims marked the second anniversary of the killings.

No casualties were reported but tensions were running high. About 200 policemen were deployed to secure the massacre site and the immediate vicinity with dozens of people attending the commemoration ceremonies.

Provincial Gov. Esmael Mangudadatu, whose relatives were among the dead, canceled a visit to the massacre site in Ampatuan township in Maguindanao province, saying "We're taking no chance."

"I was about to go there but the provincial director advised me to refrain from going to the site," Mangudadatu said. He survived an August bomb attack that killed two people in the southern Philippines, where shooting incidents and bomb explosions are common.

According to a military report, two of the homemade bombs were made of 81 mm mortar shells and two-way radios to remotely detonate them. They were found along the national highway near a camp of Muslim rebels.

"It looks like it's aimed at scaring away or inflicting casualties among those planning to attend the anniversary," said military spokesman Lt. Col. Leopoldo Galon.

It wasn't clear who was responsible for planting the explosives, but about 100 of the 197 people charged in the politically motivated 2009 killings are still at large.

Andal Ampatuan Sr., patriach of a powerful Maguindanao clan and former governor of an autonomous Muslim region, is among nearly 100 suspects being tried on murder charges in the massacre, together with his sons and relatives.

Gunmen allegedly led by former town mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr. stopped supporters of the Mangudadatu, the Ampatuans' political rival, as they traveled to filed for candidacy in regional elections. They were led to a hilltop clearing, gunned down and hastily buried in mass graves. The dead included 32 media workers covering the Mangudadatu, making the massacre the worst single killing of journalists in the world.

Relatives and colleagues of the slain journalists visited the massacre site Tuesday to offer prayers and 58 white lilies and lit candles. The charge sheet lists 57 victims but the body of journalist Reynaldo Momay, who was also part of the convoy, was never found.

A Roman Catholic priest celebrated Mass at the mound where concrete markers bearing the names of dead were erected.

Muslim rebels have waged a bloody insurgency for self-rule in Maguindanao and other parts of the southern Mindanao region, the homeland of minority Muslims in the predominantly Catholic Philippines. The conflict has killed more than 120,000 people in nearly four decades.

How Huguette Clark's millions were spent

Associated Press

This is the last known photo of Huguette Clark, taken 80 years ago. She hid away in a New York hospital room for at least the past 22 years, until her death in May. This photo was made on Aug. 11, 1930, the day of her divorce, in Reno, Nev. Her marriage lasted two years. She had no children.

NEW YORK ? More than $3 million dollars on dolls. Nearly $2 million?to her attorney's favorite charity. Another $380,000 in checks written to the staff on a single day, just as the press started to ask questions. And a magic bottomless checking account with $43 million to spend.

These details emerge from court documents filed in the early stages of a legal battle over the $400 million copper-mining fortune of the late reclusive heiress Huguette Clark. The documents give us new glimpses into the life of one of America's richest and oddest families. And they raise new questions about the actions of her attorney and accountant, who remain under criminal investigation even after her death in May at 104.

Attorneys are readying for a massive battle in the probate court known as Surrogate's Court in Manhattan. The building is less than a mile from Exchange Place near Wall Street, where Clark's father, former U.S. Sen. William Andrews Clark, managed the fortune he made from the mines of Montana and Arizona, and from banks, railroads and other ventures. Clark's relatives, kin from her father's first marriage, are expected in coming weeks to challenge her last will and testament, which cut out her family entirely, leaving about $34 million to her nurse and more than $17 million to her attorney and accountant through fees and direct bequests.

In this early phase of the massive estate case, her attorney and accountant have had to account to the court for all financial transactions they made using her legal power of attorney. They held that power, in various forms, for the last 15 years of her life, beginning in July 1996 when she was 90 years old.

The attorney and accountant are also?being investigated by the Manhattan district attorney after questions were raised in a series of articles on msnbc.com about the sale of various properties owned by Clark, and about how the attorney and accountant ended up owning one of the homes of another elderly client. The pair?asked the court to keep their financial accounting secret, arguing that they wanted to protect Clark's privacy. But the court rejected their request, making the following details available for anyone to read at the Surrogate's Clerks office.

In all, the records show $126.3 million in spending by her attorney and accountant from her accounts during those 15 years, and another $43.3 million that was transferred into her personal account, apparently to cover her own spending. The total of $170 million works out to?$1 million per month for a woman who never left her hospital room during that time.

Among the highlights of the financial disclosure, drawn from the hundreds of pages of court records:

While her attorney and accountant were writing the checks for all the expenses for her three empty mansions, for her health care, for her staff, her legal expenses and all the rest, Huguette Clark had her own personal checkbook. We don't yet have the details of the checks that she wrote, but the accounting does show how much was transferred into her checking account, in lumps of $50,000, $200,000, even $5 million at a time. Between January 1997 and February 2009, a period of 12 years when she was between 90 and 102 years old, her magic checkbook was refilled in the amount of $43,325,000.

Au Nain Bleu, a renowned doll and toy shop in Paris, was paid $2.5 million in 110 separate payments from 1997 to 2006. One of Clark's friends has said that her dolls were "her closest companions." The largest payment was for $82,513 in February 2004.

Theriault's doll auctions received $729,000 in 21 payments from 1997 to 2009. The largest was $232,680 in July 2007.

Christopher Sadowski

Attorney Wallace "Wally" Bock says he has always done exactly what his client, heiress Huguette Clark, has asked. He acknowledged soliciting from her a gift of $1.5 million for the community where his daughter and grandchildren live. Court records show the amount to be $1.85 million.

Clark, who was raised a Roman Catholic, made several large contributions to Jewish settlements on the West Bank, where her attorney's daughter lives. Msnbc.com disclosed in 2010 that the attorney, Wallace "Wally" Bock, asked Clark to contribute $1.5 million to a security system for his daughter's settlement. Bock acknowledged that payment in a legal filing last year. The new accounting shows that the total was actually $1.85 million. Bock or Clark's accountant, convicted felon Irving Kamsler, wrote four checks on her account totaling $1.65 million from 2000 through 2002 to the Central Fund of Israel. Then in September 2003, Bock wrote a check on her account for $200,000 to American Friends of New Communities in Israel.

The accounting shows that Kamsler received a stipend for his accounting services, peaking at $7,500 a month, or a rate of $90,000 per year. Bock's law firm was paid $18,000 to $25,000 per month, or about $250,000 per year. If the will is upheld, they stand to gain much more. Bock and Kamsler would receive $500,000 each as beneficiaries, and about $8 million each if the court allows them to serve as executors of her estate, with additional fees or salary as directors of a charitable foundation to be established to show her art in her California mansion. Both men have declined to comment on their actions, but their spokesmen have said the men both acted honorably in carrying out Clark's wishes.

The most remarkable day covered by the financial disclosure may have been Nov. 16, 2009. This was one month after this reporter met with Bock at his office and made clear that msnbc.com was going to publish a story raising questions about Clark's whereabouts and financial affairs. On that Monday in November, Bock or Kamsler wrote $380,000 in checks on Clark's personal account, which apparently hadn't been used in nine months. Checks went to Dr. Henry Singman, her internist, for $50,000; nurse Hadassah Peri for $60,000; her husband Daniel Peri for $60,000; accountant Kamsler for $60,000; personal assistant Christopher Sattler for $60,000; nurse Geraldine Coffey for $30,000; goddaughter Wanda Styka for $50,000, and nurse Erlinda Ysit for $10,000. That was followed three weeks later by a check to attorney Bock for $60,000. In all, $440,000.

Claudio Papapietro

Irving Kamsler, Huguette Clark's longtime accountant, pleaded guilty in October 2008 to attempting to disseminate indecent material to minors on AOL. The court sentenced him to five years of probation, but he was allowed to keep his license as a certified public accountant. In a letter he told his client only the barest details of the case.

Through the years her main private nurse, Hadassah Peri, received $2,520 a week, or $131,040 a year. She also was paid a lump sum of $5 million in 2009. As previously reported, Clark gave Peri the money to buy four homes for herself and her children. If the will is upheld, Peri would receive about $34 million, in addition to Clark's doll collection, value unknown.

Beth Israel Medical Center, the New York hospital where she lived for years, received $4.9 million from December 1997 through February 2011, not counting payments to various doctors and departments. That works out to about $1,000 per day. The hospital has declined to explain why it allowed Clark, who was said to be quite healthy, to live in hospital rooms for the last 22 years of her life.

Her primary physician, internist Dr. Henry S. Singman, received regular monthly payments peaking at $5,000 a month, or $521,000 during this period. He is named in her will for another $100,000.

Her closest friend, Suzanne Pierre, received regular payments of $50,000 for service as a social secretary, totaling $1.7 million. Pierre also received a $10 million gift back in 2000. Pierre, who was the widow of Clark's physician, died just weeks before Clark.

Only a few public charities appear in the accounting. The largest is $810,000 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where the bulk of her father's art collection resides. In the will, the Corcoran stands to receive one of Monet's Water Lilies series, a small canvas valued at roughly $25 million. The painting has not been seen publicly since 1925.

Bock or Kamsler wrote checks for other small charitable gifts: $1,000 to the Music Academy of the West, $100 to the New Canaan Firefighters Benevolent Fund, $25,000 to the Santa Barbara Community Arts Music Association. Two gifts were made in the spring of 2010, just after her case came to light: $10,000 to the Paul Clark Home founded by her father in Butte, Mont., and $1,000 to the Spence School, her alma mater in Manhattan. Other charitable gifts may have been made from her personal checkbook.

Clark, who had no children of her own, apparently paid tuition and fees for several students. Bock or Kamsler wrote checks to Boston College ($53,000), Boston University ($20,000), New York City College of Technology ($6,600), and four Catholic Schools: Long Beach Catholic School ($25,000), Sacred Heart Academy ($47,700), St. Bernard's School ($15,000), and Saint Ignatius Loyola School ($500).

She made payments to the IRS for $45 million, and New York state income tax of $15 million. And state gift tax payments of $975,000.

Her unoccupied 5th Avenue apartments, said to be the largest property under a single ownership anywhere on the prestigious avenue, cost $3.75 million during these 15 years just for the taxes and co-op fees, peaking at $28,844 per month. She has 15,0000 square feet on two floors of 907 Fifth Ave. at 71st Street. Another $900,000 went to Anton Sattler Management Co., which handled affairs at her apartment. And $1.5 million was paid through the years to Christopher Sattler, who worked as a personal assistant and property manager. He also would receive $500,000 if the will is upheld.

Her vacant country home in New Canaan, Conn., on the market for several years at $24 million,?cost over $100,000 a year just to pay the property taxes.

Her unoccupied Santa Barbara oceanfront estate, with an estimated value of $100 million,?cost her $8.8 million in various operating costs from 1997 to 2011.

All of Clark's properties are locked down now, protected by the court until the case is resolved.

The expenditures will be investigated by attorneys for the New York County Public Administrator, whose office was appointed by the Surrogate's Court to serve as a third temporary executor, along with Bock and Kamsler. One of the roles of the Public Administrator in this case is to make sure the estate was protected, both before and after Clark's death.

To keep up with the spending, her attorney and accountant were?raising money during this period as well: $87 million transferred in from a custody account at J.P. Morgan, $15 million from a Bank of America account, a $5 million loan from J.P. Morgan in 2009, the $6 million sale of one of her Stradivarius violins, and $52 million in sales at Sotheby's. (Her last major purchase at Sotheby's was in 2000 for $124,000.)

Huguette Clark did save considerable money through the years in one respect: electricity. As she lived in a hospital room on the Lower East Side, the Con Edison bill at her 15,000-square-foot apartments on Fifth Avenue rarely rose above $100 a month.

Oil prices fall sharply on fears of slow growth (AP)

NEW YORK ? Oil prices fell nearly two percent Monday over fears that the world economy will remain weak and push down demand for crude.

West Texas Intermediate oil, which is used as a benchmark to price oil in much of the U.S., fell $1.30 to $96.37 in midday trading in New York. Brent crude, which is used to price many foreign varieties of price oil, fell $1.45 to $105.95 in London.

The global economy is under assault from several directions. The inability of Europe to deal with its crushing debt problems is raising concerns that the region will fall into recession. Also, as long as the crisis continues, the fear remains that the world financial system could seize up if European banks and banks with ties to Europe stop lending.

"The market's biggest concern is the ongoing strife in Europe and the uncertainty that brings," said Phil Flynn, an analyst at PFG Best in Chicago.

When the economy slows, demand for crude oil and refined products like diesel and gasoline falls because fewer goods are produced and shipped, and people travel less.

The U.S. national average for retail gasoline fell slightly to $3.351 from $3.359 on Monday, according to AAA, Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express.

Another concern is that the Congressional committee set up to reduce U.S. spending, known as the super committee, will fail to come up with a plan. That could lead to further gridlock in Washington at a time when the U.S. economy is fragile.

"The supercommittee isn't looking very super," Flynn said.

Oil is also being pushed lower by a stronger U.S. dollar. Oil is priced in dollars, so when the dollar becomes more valuable compared with other currencies, oil becomes more expensive to holders of foreign currency and they tend to buy less of it.

Benchmark U.S. crude spiked to nearly $103 a barrel last Wednesday after a pipeline company announced plans to try to relieve a glut of landlocked oil at a major hub in Oklahoma by shipping it to the gulf coast. Brent crude fell because the plan would add to supplies of oil that can be shipped by sea, relieving a relative shortage.

Now both are falling because economies around the world may need less oil no matter how it is delivered.

In other energy trading in New York, natural gas rose 7 cents to $3.39 per 1,000 cubic feet, gasoline futures lost a penny at $2.4715 a gallon and heating oil fell 4 cents to $2.9903 a gallon..

Review: Nook Tablet is Kindle Fire's worthy foe (AP)

NEW YORK ? Listen, and I'll tell you the story of the bookstore chain that stormed into the hottest category in consumer electronics and conquered.

It's a nice underdog story, right? A bit like the tale of plucky rebels who attacked Lord Vader's Death Star.

But that was fiction. Barnes & Noble Inc.'s new Nook Tablet ($249) is a solid product, worthy of duking it out with Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire. Considering that the Nook comes from a desert planet where the only entertainment was shooting womp rats (Sorry, I mean "from a bookstore chain."), it's really impressive.

But the Nook doesn't quite muster enough force to blow up a Death Star. Barnes & Noble's earlier Nooks were dedicated book-reading devices, and the Tablet is at most a half-way step into the world of general-purpose tablet computing.

Like the new Kindle Fire, the Tablet has a 7-inch, touch-sensitive color screen, about half the size of the iPad's. It's the same screen as on the Nook Color, the e-reader Barnes & Noble launched a year ago. I thought it was the best e-reader yet when it launched.

The Tablet improves on the Nook Color mainly by beefing up the processor and the memory and extending the battery life to 11.5 hours of reading, or 9 hours of video.

The Tablet also has improved software, but the Color will be getting the same software through a downloadable update.

The Tablet is debuting with Netflix and Hulu applications. Coupled with the nice, sharp screen, that makes for a good device for that TV and movie fix _as long as you're connected to Wi-Fi. The apps actually highlight one of the shortcomings of the Tablet: there's no way (short of hacking the software) to use it for offline viewing of movies you buy or rent.

Barnes & Noble promises to provide access to some sort of movie store next year. Amazon, meanwhile, launched the Kindle Fire with access not just to Netflix and Hulu, but to its own store with downloadable video, plus free streaming content for Amazon Prime subscribers.

Barnes & Noble is also well behind when it comes to the selection of third-party applications: it has about 1,000 available today. That compares to just under 10,000 at Amazon, and 500,000 on the iPad.

However, the Nook has these features over the Fire:

? Faster processor and more memory for software operations, which means faster Web browsing and magazine page-flipping.

? Longer battery life.

? Twice as much storage space: 16 gigabytes compared to eight. Don't get too excited about this, though. What Barnes & Noble has left out of its marketing material is that only 1 gigabyte is available for content that isn't bought from Barnes & Noble. Since books don't take up much space and Barnes & Noble doesn't sell movies, much of the 16 gigabytes is likely to be wasted.

? A slot for memory cards. This is the cure for the lack of memory for non-Barnes & Noble content. You can add another 16 gigabytes of memory by buying a $20 card.

? The ability to load books from third-party stores like Google Books. On the Kindle, you can only read books from Amazon.

? Netflix streams are sharper. Barnes & Noble initially claimed they were in high definition, but that X-wing doesn't fly: the Tablet's screen isn't high-definition.

? Children's books with built-in narration (some Kindle apps have this).

? A microphone. This doesn't have a lot of uses at the moment, but it does allow you to record your own narration.

Apart from the ones mentioned above, the Kindle Fire has these features over the Nook:

? A lower price: $199.

? The Comixology app, the most popular one for comic books. On the Nook, you're pretty much limited to buying electronic comics from Barnes & Noble.

For the most part, the Nook Tablet justifies the higher price tag compared to the Kindle. Of course, anyone with money to spend should also be looking at the iPad 2, which starts at $499 and does all of what these smaller tablets do ? plus a whole lot more. That's one Death Star that won't be exploding in a hurry.

Bonnar comes clean with Koscheck after UFC 139 win

Bonnar comes clean with Koscheck after UFC 139 winAfter winning a decision over Kyle Kingsbury at UFC 139, Stephan Bonnar was honest about a legal matter with a fellow fighter. After the win, he spoke with UFC commentator Joe Rogan and apologized to?UFC welterweight?Josh Koscheck.

"I have a little confession to make. I had this big plan to get this win, and then call out Koscheck. But you know what? Something about fighting makes you be honest with yourself. The truth is, he asked me not to make those shirts, and I did it anyway. So Koscheck, I apologize. You taught me a valuable lesson. From now on, fighters gotta approve of those shirts, and they'll get paid for every one of them."

Bonnar had a brewing feud with Koscheck. Though the two were castmates on the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter," they had recently fallen out when Bonnar's clothing company printed a parody t-shirt of Koscheck.

Based off the 1980s trading cards "Garbage Pail Kids," Bonnar's shirt depicted Koscheck as a Cabbage Patch Kid. The problem was that Bonnar didn't get permission from Koscheck to use his image. ?Koscheck sued, and Bonnar responded by challenging the much-smaller Koscheck to a fight.

"Words cannot describe how bad I want to kick Josh Koscheck's [expletive] right now," Bonnar said in June. "Sometimes I can't sleep at night because I'm up just thinking about all the things I want to do to him ? and kick his [expletive]."

But Bonnar has put those feelings behind him. Getting permission and paying fighters for their images is the right thing to do. It's just surprising to see Koscheck, who is usually considered a "bad guy" in MMA, teach that lesson to Bonnar, a beloved fighter.

YouTube Video Prompts Calls for UC Davis Chancellor's Resignation (Mashable)

The Faculty Association at the University of California, Davis, is calling for the resignation of chancellor Linda Katehi after a YouTube video surfaced showing police pepper spraying passive Occupy Wall Street protesters. "The Chancellor?s authorization of the use of police force to suppress the protests by students and community members speaking out on behalf of our university and public higher education generally represents a gross failure of leadership," the Davis Faculty Association wrote in a blog post on Saturday. The post goes on to criticize Katehi for "effectively authorizing [the police's] use of excessive force against peaceful UCD student protestors"

[More from Mashable: YouTube Favorite Annoying Orange Gets TV Show]

The call for Katehi's resignation comes after various videos showing police pepper spraying OWS protesters hit YouTube late Friday, shortly after it occurred. In response, Katehi announced on Saturday that she had created a task force to investigate the police's action.

According to reports, police had asked the protesters to move and then warned them if they didn't, they'd be pepper sprayed. Soon afterwards, they carried out their threat and the moment was captured on video.

'Breaking Dawn' soundtrack is fun and sappy -- in a good way

'Breaking Dawn' has music that's a little edgier than the previous films as Edward and Bella move into a new chapter of their lives

Music has been a vital part of The Twilight Saga from the very beginning. Author Stephenie Meyer acknowledges the musicians who influenced her at the end of each book in the series, and the soundtracks of each of the first three films have gone on to sell numerous copies. Even the cast has gotten involved in the soundtracks ? Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward Cullen, recorded two songs for the Twilight soundtrack; new cast member Mia Maestro has a song on this one; and Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella Swan, suggested what has (arguably) become ?the? song of the series.

It is that song ? and the return of Carter Burwell ? that make The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 soundtrack feel like a bookend to the first Twilight movie. Pattinson and Stewart dance to Iron & Wine?s Flightless Bird, American Mouth at their characters? prom in Twilight; it seems fitting to have this song play over another pivotal moment in their lives. And I loved Carter Burwell?s score of the first film and was thrilled when I read that he?d be scoring the last two. Just like the characters, this score is more mature but still influenced by its past. I love that you can still hear recognizable pieces of the first score ? including bits of Bella?s Lullaby ? in a reimagined form. (And I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing Pattinson play Burwell?s lullaby for Edward and Bella?s daughter in Part 2.)

This soundtrack has a decidedly edgier feel to it than the indie vibe of its last two predecessors. In essence, the music is maturing out of those angst-ridden teenage years much like the characters. The album, to me, has an overall feeling of contentment that parallels the movie. Now, I will warn you ? there are a lot of love songs on this soundtrack. Which is exactly what you should expect from a movie about a couple getting married and having a child. But don?t worry ? we?re not talking all over-the-top ballads. The general theme seems to be finally getting what you?ve waited for, committing yourself to another person and facing the future together.

With that said, the two big, sweeping ballads ? Turning Page and A Thousand Years ? are truly lovely and certainly fit that theme. I predict A Thousand Years, in particular, will be the new go-to wedding song. And there are some truly catchy songs on this soundtrack. Love Will Take You, From Now On and I Didn?t Mean It are the kind of songs that have me bopping my head along to the beat (and maybe doing a little dancing in my car ?).

There were two omissions I hope make it for the Part 2 soundtrack. Pattinson was noticeably absent from the New Moon and Eclipse soundtracks and doesn?t appear on this one, either. He has a unique voice and musical style that keeps my fingers crossed for the last soundtrack. In addition, this is the first Twilight Saga soundtrack that hasn?t featured a song from Muse. Since this band is Meyer?s favorite and often her ? well ? muse, it seems strange to leave them off the list. Hopefully they will make a return for Part 2; it wouldn?t feel right without them.

Overall, this is a fun, happy, sing-along kind of soundtrack. Yes, it?s a little bit sappy, but don?t weddings make us all feel a little bit sappy? Enjoy the smile this soundtrack will put on your face.

White House says U.S.-China relationship "complicated" (Reuters)

NUSA DUA, Indonesia (Reuters) ? The United States has been direct with China about its plans to be more active in the Asia-Pacific region as well as its interests in the South China Sea, a top White House official said on Saturday.

National Security Adviser Tom Donilon said President Barack Obama and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao talked mainly about economic issues when they met on the sidelines of an Asian leaders' summit on the Indonesian island of Bali on Saturday.

Donilon said Wen had requested more time to speak with Obama after the two leaders sat next to each other during an official dinner on Friday.

"They had an informal meeting this morning and the principal focus of the meeting was on economics," he told reporters on Saturday, the last day of Obama's nine-day Asia-Pacific tour.

Obama and Wen discussed "specific issues around business practices" as well as U.S. concerns about controls on China's yuan currency and its desire to see Beijing adhere more closely to international norms and rules, the U.S. official said.

The two leaders also touched on the sensitive issue of the South China Sea. Donilon said the United States was not trying to play judge in territorial disputes over those waters but wanted to see the shipping lane remain open.

"We don't have a claim, we don't take sides in the claims, but we do as a global maritime power have an interest in seeing these principles applied broadly," he said.

Over the course of his trip to Hawaii, Australia and Indonesia, Obama has ruffled Chinese feathers with tough language on trade and plans to increase the U.S. military presence in Australia so it can respond faster to maritime disputes and other emergencies in the region.

On Saturday, Donilon sought to play down tensions in the U.S.-China relationship, which he said was on the whole was "productive and constructive."

He said the United States had been "quite direct with the Chinese about our strategy" and that Beijing understood Washington was serious about sustaining a more active presence in the region to help ensure its stability and peace.

"Our partners and allies look to us for that reassurance. They want to know that the United States is going to play the role it has played with respect to security and reassurance and balancing and stability here," Donilon said.

Donilon also stressed that Washington is continuing to engage directly with China on many economic and other themes.

"We have a very complicated and quite substantial relationship with China across the board," he said.

"We are ... in an important conversation with them about economics which we think is important for the region and important for the United States."

DeeDee Garcia Blase: Letter from Immigration Ground Zero to Senator Marco Rubio

Dear Senator Marco Rubio,

The immigration tide is turning since the downfall of Arizona State Senator Russell Pearce, who launched a wave of anti-immigrant state laws across the nation that began with the harsh law in Arizona, which you supported.

We recently learnt that you want the GOP to tone down the anti-immigrant rhetoric; however, we need more than just lip service from you. You see the problem, and the reason for Republican State lawmakers implementing their anti-immigrant bills that comes with the nasty and hateful rhetoric, has much to do with the broken immigration system. There is no question the system is broken, and it seems as if all state Republican lawmakers are drumming to the same beat and to the tune of: "It is the responsibility of the government to fix the immigration system." That's where you come in as a federal lawmaker. As a federal lawmaker, it is your duty to step in and help fix the broken federal immigration policy, and to respect the supremacy clause that keeps our states united and to protect the United States Constitution. It is simply unreasonable to have 50 different immigration laws throughout the country while maintaining sound relationships and trade agreements with our neighbors.

We are asking for more than just lip service and a mere request to tone down anti-immigrant rhetoric. We would like for federal lawmakers like you to fix the broken immigration system. You can do so by simply calling Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey and working with the legal immigration reform bill he has implemented. His office should be willing to work with you on getting a reasonable plan underway. Senator Menendez needs one Republican sponsor -- and I believe that you can be that sponsor.

So far, all we have seen from you is your enforcement-only support for large government and bureaucratic ideas via national e-verify. E-verify puts additional burdens on the small business owner. We know that enforcement-only policies do not work, and this is proven when we have already achieved 100% of operational goals under the Bush Secure Fence Act of 2006. It is now time to also work on a plan that will bring my people out (and several others in the international community) from the shadows of society.

I don't believe you can quite empathize with our pain, since you are of Cuban descent and may not understand how harsh anti-immigrant laws affect us. Perhaps it is because you are taking advantage of how several in Florida have benefitted from privileged Cuban amnesty under the Cuban Adjustment Act (CAA). Several ethnic communities from across the globe do not receive a privileged amnesty, and it can start with your help, Mr. Rubio. You have the power to help other immigrants with the power afforded to you, and all you have to do is reach across the aisle with Senator Robert Menendez and work on fixing the broken system. Unlike Idaho Republican Congressman Ra?l R. Labrador who wants to do away with the CAA, the Tequila Party fully supports Cuban immigrants coming into our country under the CAA just as we do other immigrants who flee their corrupt nations to achieve the American dream.

Our Tequila Party has the support of your own Floridian Cuban immigrants who hurt to see you take anti-DREAM Act and enforcement-only approaches on the immigration system. Cuban-Americans fully recognize that those of Cuban descent only make up 3% of the total Hispanic population pie, and they are concerned about Mexican-American and Cuban-American relationships. Those of Mexican descent make up almost 70% of the Hispanic population pie, and this is why your own constituents have reached out to us. They want us (Tequila Party leaders) to help free Cuba with the strength of our "Mexican-American" numbers. We are fully prepared to help and direct our efforts to "FREE CUBA / CUBA LIBRE" but that is contingent upon whether or not Cuban senators step up to the plate during a tough Latino-American era. Senator Bob Menendez has already taken that first step because he has not forgotten about the struggles of immigrants. Jos? Mart? once said: "He who could have been a torch and stoops to being a pair of jaws is a deserter." As such, there are several international immigrants who do not benefit from immigration privileges or amnesty and we believe you have the ability to be a torch.

Legal immigration reform is past due, and we are late as record numbers get deported. We are asking that you get on the right side of the immigration issue right now because the Latino community has been asking you to get on the right side for months. History will record in this difficult anti-Latino era who was compassionate and who was not in the time of our need.

Please contact Senator Menendez to hammer out a reasonable secure borders and legal immigration reform plan. Being a leader means we need to make tough decisions during a time when it is unpopular to do so. Time is of the essence since we are hearing news that Republican Congressman Lamar Smith of Texas thinks President Obama is not deporting enough of my people, and we know Smith is not speaking the truth. We see the two forces at play hurting, yet helping the anti-immigrant agenda, and we will continue to do what we can with fervor to help those who are weak, defenseless and scared.

Regards,
