Where in the World Is the Linux Desktop Thriving?

Just how much market share can the Linux Desktop claim? The debate's a familiar one, perhaps even a tired one. But recently Pingdom published a list of the 20 countries in which the Linux desktop enjoys the most popularity. Naturally, that list was quickly criticized from multiple angles. So what's Linux's true penetration? "In the end, I don't think we will ever know," said blogger and developer Jeff Hoogland.

The old "market share" debate is one that's all too familiar to most Linux fans, particularly the tired -- not to mention wildly unrealistic -- "1 percent" figure detractors love to cite as desktop Linux's portion.

So it was hard not to sit up and take notice earlier this month when the Pingdom blog published a post entitled "The top 20 strongholds for desktop Linux."

"There are some countries where people have embraced Linux on the desktop to a greater degree than most," the post explains before going on to present a list of the top 20 countries on the planet by local desktop operating system market share.

0.76 Percent Worldwide?

The results are a mixed bag. Cuba takes first place, with Linux claiming more than 6 percent of the local desktop market there, while India weighs in at No. 20, with Linux accounting for 1.26 percent, according to the StatCounter data Pingdom used.

Particularly notable are the complete absence of the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom from the top 20 list, as well as the 0.76 percent figure Pingdom offers for Linux's worldwide market share.

Can this less-than-encouraging list really represent the true state of affairs on the Linux desktop? Let's just say bloggers have had plenty to say on that point.

'Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics!'

"There are three types of lies in the world: Lies, damned lies and statistics!" Thoughts on Technology blogger and Bodhi Linux lead developer Jeff Hoogland told LinuxInsider over a Tipsy Tux Twist down at the Broken Windows Lounge.

"Market share is one of those never-ending arguments in the Linux world," Hoogland explained. "How can we track it? Do we do it by ISO image downloads? Nope -- a single download can count for multiple installs."

The problem with using Web statistics as a means of judging market share, meanwhile, "is that it fails to account for piles of computers in limited- or no-Internet countries," Hoogland added. "Beyond this, it also fails to identify the countless Linux systems that are forced to use user agent changers on websites that require Windows/OS X to view.

"Is Linux beating Windows on the desktop? Hardly," Hoogland concluded. "At the same time, though, I am not sure I agree with that wonder '1 percent' number that is thrown around so often. In the end, I don't think we will ever know."

'Seriously WRONG!'

Blogger Robert Pogson took an even stronger view.

"Those numbers are seriously WRONG!" Pogson exclaimed. "Brazil has about 20 percent of production in GNU/Linux PCs. Brazil, France, Russia, Spain, Germany, India, China and Malaysia actively promote GNU/Linux on desktops and pump them into schools and government offices."

Brazil also "has a PC-making industry that cranks them out," he added. "Thin clients run more than 10 percent of desktops, and many of them have a minimal GNU/Linux installation showing the pictures and sending the clicks."

'Retailers Cannot Get Them'

The only reason Linux's market share is low in some regions is that "retailers refuse to stock GNU/Linux systems or cannot get them from OEMs," Pogson asserted.

In many parts of the world, however, "you can buy identical systems side-by-side with different operating systems, including GNU/Linux as a choice," he pointed out.

Microsoft announces Windows Phone 'Mango' update, coming in autumn (updated)

Mango may no longer be a secret in and of itself, but we doubt Microsoft would've set up an entire event to preview its big Windows Phone update if there was nothing hidden up that Redmond sleeve. To that end, we've just come across an official press release from the company, released on its Romanian website. The machine translation awaits after the break.

Update: We've now swapped in the natively English press release. There's also confirmation that Mango will indeed be known as Windows Phone 7.1.

Update 2: Turns out Microsoft "had to give [the SDK] a name" and dubbed it 7.1, so Mango retains its formal WP7 moniker.

The first thing to note is that the update will be "freely available" to all current Windows Phone handsets, something Microsoft already committed to, and will be ready for download "at the beginning of this summer." (Update: it looks like our translation machinery betrayed us, tipsters are saying it's actually the beginning of autumn.) Naturally, the new goodness will also figure in new devices and from new partners, including Acer, Fujitsu, and ZTE. Those fresh faces join Nokia and the incumbent partners of Dell (maybe) HTC, Samsung, and LG to expand the WP ecosystem.

A Beta SDK of the new Windows Phone free tools will be available within 24 hours, we're promised, for developers to sink their teeth into.

In the communications department, Microsoft is introducing conversation threads, which seamlessly transition between MSN Messenger chats, SMS, and Facebook messaging to keep you talking to the same person irrespective of the method. New contact group tiles are also incoming, with the ability to send quick emails or IMs to entire groups. Twitter and LinkedIn contact integration is mentioned, though we expect this go a lot deeper in Twitter's case, as Microsoft has already demonstrated. Speaking of more in-depth integration, Microsoft has improved the Live Tiles to allow the display of more dynamic information from apps, which will of course be able to multitask beautifully. TMZ has obtained the 911 calls made after Randy "Macho Man" Savage's car crash in Florida last week -- in which one caller says she watched the wrestler hit a tree "real hard."

As TMZ first reported, Savage died soon after the crash.

Randy's brother tells us the wrestler suffered a heart attack behind the wheel and lost control of the vehicle.

Officials performed an autopsy to find an official cause of death -- results could take 4 to 6 weeks.

Lauren Alaina may not get her shot to be the next "American Idol" because she has lost her voice ...spies on the set tell TMZ ... and it could be the break of a lifetime for Haley Reinhart.

We're told during the rehearsal this afternoon, Lauren -- who has been losing her voice -- was supposed to sing three songs.? She got through the first, struggled through the second and was unable to perform the third.

Our spies say a doctor on the set has ordered Lauren not to sing or speak, but there is a "real possibility" she will not be able to perform on tonight's show.

We're told if Lauren is unable to perform, producers will reinstate the third place finisher -- Haley Reinhart who will then compete against Scotty McCreery for the title.

Producers are trying to find Haley right now.

There is a tanning suite equipped with sunbeds, along with a massage area and two outdoor swimming pools. I found it to be modern, bright and beautifully equipped for a boutique break.

Blau Porto Petro Beach Resort and Spa

This stunning resort is situated on the south coast of Majorca in the resort of Portopetro.? The hotel offers three outdoor pools and one indoor swimming pool, along with indoor and outdoor games facilities.Theres also a sauna, fitness center, spa and wellness center, and beauty treatment lounge. You can also book yourself into one of the external activities on offer such as diving or snorkelling.? I found this to be a great all round resort with lots going on to suit many tastes.

Palacio Ca Sa Galesa Hotel

This hotel is situated in the centre of Palma and is set in a building dating back to 1576. The hotel offers a range of activities including a sauna, gym, solarium, spa & wellness center, massage,? jacuzzi, indoor swimming pool, library, hiking, and bike rental ? phew! The hotel is situated a stones throw away from the sea and there a good local park and gardens nearby. The hotel has a good sized garden and a terrace area for guests to enjoy. All rooms provide satellite TV, air conditioning and even a massage bath, for easing out those aching legs after a long walk.

I know this is probably not enough for you to actually safeguard yourself from an actual scam, so here?s 3 tips on how to avoid these scams:

1. Ridiculously high payouts: Some survey sites advertise outrageously high payouts, such as ?Get paid per survey?, while bearing in mind that you?re completing ONLINE paid surveys. (Online paid surveys have lower payouts than offline surveys)

2. Read the fine print: As with anything that?s too good to be true, you should always read the survey site?s Terms of Service, privacy policies and disclaimers. Contact their customer service to clarify any points that you didn?t get. If they don?t reply reliably enough (or at all), then that site is almost certainly a scam.

3. Find their contact info: Perform ?WhoIs? checkups to see if the paid survey site is registered with a proxy. A proxy is basically a piece of software that acts on behalf of another device whilst taking on the identity of the other device. This means that the sites who use a proxy are probably concealing their true identities and which would mean that they are scams.

Also, be careful of multiple sites opened by the same webmaster as this suggests that these sites all have same database of surveys. This doesn?t mean you can do the same surveys again and hope to be credited for it, since the market research companies would have already recorded you as having already done it (unless, YOU intend on using a proxy, which would be kind of ironic!).

Another thing to mention is paid survey sites with unbelievably high payouts. People who have fallen for this obvious advertising gimmick have greatly suffered setbacks from making money online, such as being paid a much lower amount than advertised (for example, getting 50 cents instead of the supposed ) and more often, not even being paid at all. And to make matters worse, the customer ?support? service won?t even reply to their complaints!

To sum up, there are a lot of scams on the Internet. Paid surveys has had a bad reputation for being nothing but a scam because people didn?t know what to avoid. However, once you do know, then paid survey sites are a great way to supplement your income and it?s certainly possible to earn a lot of money from them.
