Credit Union Statistics - September 2012

Credit unions in Great Britain were regulated by the FSA (Financial Services Authority)
between 2001 and March 2013. Aggregated statistics produced using credit unions? regulatory data were published by the FSA.

Following the commencement of the Financial Services Act 2012, responsibility for the prudential supervision of credit union reporters has come to the PRA (Prudential Regulation Authority). The Bank of England will continue to publish the credit union statistics formerly published by the FSA.

The statistics are based on the quarterly (CQ) and annual (CY) forms which have been submitted in their current format by credit unions in Great Britain since 2002. In 2012 credit unions in Northern Ireland also began to report these forms. The Bank of England will publish these statistics each July.

The Cleveland DUI Checkpoint Facebook Page is Pretty Popular

If you're looking for a one-stop shop for alerts about DUI checkpoints being run in and around Cleveland, join over 15,000 of your closest friends over at the Cleveland DUI Checkpoint Facebook Page, which has amassed that healthy total of followers in just about two weeks.

Save the outrage about the page and general alerts about where cops will be camped out looking for drunk drivers for another outlet. This isn't about assisting tipsy travelers in avoiding the law ? though, there's certainly some who use public notices of checkpoints for just that purpose. As the Facebook page's admin notes:

We believe that knowledge breeds responsibility. If people are reminded of the existence of Checkpoints, they are far more likely to call a cab or designate a driver. Indeed, it's far safer for the person who has been drinking to never get behind the wheel of a car because they know about the many Checkpoints out there, than to drive drunk for miles, endangering lives & causing the types of accidents your discussing of the way to a DWI checkpoint. Indeed, MADD has studied this issue & determined that the deterrent effect of social media warnings exceed the value of the Checkpoints themselves, reducing alcohol related injuries & deaths by 20%

Stay safe out there.

Documentary About MACC's First Artist-in-Residence Tonight | Maui ...

Before becoming the MACC?s first artist-in-residence, Wes Bruce created an installation ? a giant fort ? at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido.

The fort had an almost inexplicably profound impact on the artist as well as the community surrounding him.

A documentary about the piece, captured by award-winning filmmaker Bryan Bangerter, airs tonight at the MACC at 6 p.m. in the McCoy Studio Theater.

We talked to Bruce to learn a little bit more about his project, his art, and his experience here on Maui.

Maui Now: What got you interested in making forts as art?

Wes Bruce: I used to make a lot of paintings, but decided I wanted to put a hold on making art because I wasn?t enjoying it that much.

That summer I was part of the staff at a camp in Northern California near Yosemite National Park, and for our final staff meeting I build a huge cardboard igloo / honeycomb fort and we all spent the night in it. It was the most connective and true thing I had made. It felt worth making because of the human interaction that occurred within it.

After that summer I was asked to be in an art show in San Diego based on some paintings the curator had seen. I said that I didn?t want to make any more paintings, but I would be willing to make a fort. That was five years ago.

MN: What is the installation featured in the film about?

WB: I am working out of a metaphor I call an ?inner architecture.? Each one of us keeps who we are in these metaphorical rooms within us: all of our past, present and potential futures, hopes, fears, relationships, joy and mourning. Picture being able to enter into rooms within yourself and finding places and experiences you might not have recalled for years. That?s that short version.

MN: What do I hope the viewer gets out of watching the film?

WB: I hope they realize who and what is important to their life story. I hope they are more curious about the world around them. I hope that a sense of wonder leaves with them.

MN: The press release also mentions the ?emotional fallout of the project.? That sounds heavy. What are they talking about?

WB: My mom and dad had some tension as the project the film was about was deeply personal. It was about vulnerability and the risks that accompany it.

MN: How did you come to be MACC?s artist-in-residence?

WB: Neida Bangerter, the gallery director, asked if I would be interested in coming over and creating an exhibition with them. In order to do that logistically I realized I would have to be here for a few months because of the time it takes, and the labor-intensive nature of the art.

I have a background in education so we put that into the equation and figured out a calendar that would allow me to not only build the exhibition, but also get to hang out and empower some young artists and teach / learn from them.

MN: What are you enjoying the most about Maui?

WB: I love a lot about Maui. I love finding things the board of tourism wouldn?t want / expect me to see: the grungy corners of the Maui central base-yard, industrial back alleys in Wailuku, or the red-dusted Puunene church next to the sugar mill.

I find a lot to be curious about in these places. I love learning about the migration of different plants to Maui, and their journey through thousands of miles of open water.

I love conversations with folks who have lived here a long time and can recall old sugar camps, and villages and what life was like. And I love the wilder parts of Maui, as well: exploring steep gorges in Kipahulu, climbing trees, and witnessing the Pacific make its never ceasing approach to rocky shores.

MN: Are there any culinary surprises Maui introduced you to that you never knew about before living here?

WB: I love Opihi!

My friend Brook grew up in Haiku and introduced them to me when we were swimming in Makena. You can eat them straight off the rock (or so I?ve been told: haha). I love the salty flavor and interesting texture.

?

?A Film About a Fort? airs tonight at the MACC in the McCoy Studio Theater at 6 p.m.

The event is free to the public and will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker and the artist after the film.

Bruce?s exhibition ?Taken By Wonder? will be in the Schaefer International Gallery September 8- November 2, 2013.

Have an idea for a fun, funny or thought-provoking story or topic??Get in touch: we want to hear from you. ? Vanessa (@mauinow.com)

University of East Anglia: Woman in lake post-mortem ?inconclusive?

Body in lake post-mortem 'inconclusive'
Norfolk Fire and Rescue search the Broad on the campus of the University of East Anglia (Picture: PA)

The death of a woman whose body was found in a university lake remains ?unexplained? as investigators attempt to work out her identity.

A post-mortem examination failed to establish how the woman, who was discovered at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, died.

The results proved inconclusive, with detectives so far unable to establish the woman?s age because of the state the body was found in.

Members of the public who witnessed the discovery said they believed she was ?young?. It is unclear how long she had been in the water.

Police were called to the university?s campus yesterday morning after an angler spotted the body floating face down in the water.

Police investigate at the scene (Picture: YouTube)

?We now await the results of further tests to fully established the woman?s cause of death and, in the meantime, will be stepping up our inquiries to identify her,? said DCI Dennis Lacey, from Norfolk CID.

He said the body was fully dressed in what he described as ?normal day wear?.

University officials believe it is unlikely the girl was a student, while Norfolk police say the find is not being linked to any known missing people cases in Norfolk, Suffolk or Cambridgeshire.

A search is underway in an attempt to work out where the woman entered the water and to find any trace of her belongings to help identify her.

Traffic Accidents Decrease in First Half of Ramadan | Jordan ...

Posted by: MeNewsWire

pic12513ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates ? Tuesday, July 30th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

According to statistics issued by the Traffic Coordination Directorate General at the Ministry of Interior, the number of traffic accidents of different types across the country dropped by 28 accidents in the first half of the Holy Month of Ramadan this year, compared to the same period in 2012. A total of 119 accidents were reported in the first half of Ramadan this year, compared to the 147 accidents in the same period last year.

Statistics also showed that crash accidents dropped by 11 accidents, whereas 73 accidents were reported in the first half of Ramadan compared to 84 last year. Turnover accidents witnessed a slight increase of 5 accidents, rising from 19 accidents in the first half of Ramadan 2012 to 24 accidents this year.? Run-over accidents however, witnessed a noticeable decrease by 21 accidents, dropping to 20 from 41 last year.

Moreover, statistics provided a comprehensive classification of traffic accidents, whereas all accidents other than crash, turnover and run-over accidents, were placed under the category Other Accidents. These other accidents represent a small percentage of the total number of traffic accidents, and amounted to 2 accidents during the first half of Ramadan? in 2012 and 2013.

Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Zaabi, Director General of the Traffic Coordination Directorate at the Ministry of Interior, said: ?Despite the decrease in the number of traffic accidents across the country, the number of deaths increased by 7 cases; a total of 28 deaths were reported during the first half of Ramadan this year, compared to 21 last year. However, injuries of all kinds dropped by 47 this year, and amounted to 174 simple, moderate and severe injuries compared to 221 during the same period in 2012.

According to Brigadier Al Zaabi: ?The increase in the number of deaths? during the first half of Ramadan this year, compared to the same period last year, is due to the severity of the accidents, which occur due? to over speeding, and failure to observe traffic laws and regulations, such as crossing red lights and lack of concentration while driving.?

He added: ?Traffic accidents of all kinds, and their resulting deaths and injuries, as well as traffic violations, are the natural results of the increasing movement of vehicles on the country?s roads. The Traffic and Patrols Departments in the country are diligently endeavoring to train and qualify thousands of people wishing to obtain driving licenses, as one of the most important requirement for economical and social development across the country.?

Brigadier Al Zaabi called upon motorists to observe traffic laws and regulation and legal speed limits, in order to avoid the risks of traffic accidents, and their repercussions.

He stressed the importance of complying with traffic laws and regulations, driving carefully, keeping a safe? distance between vehicles, avoiding traffic disruption due to random parking at public parking spaces. He warned them against parking in spaces dedicated to people with special needs, civil defense or ambulance and rescue teams, to avoid hampering their work in emergency cases. He urged motorists to avoid using their mobile phones while driving, whether to talk, SMS or chat.

Brigadier Al Zaabi explained: ?Using hand-held mobile phones while driving is a violation to the law, due to its great danger to the life of motorists and road users alike. Using hand-held mobile phones to talk, text or chat may distract drivers and reduce their concentration and reactions, thus leading to traffic accidents.?

Train of Thought Derailed: How an Accident Can Affect Your Brain

A survivor of last week's deadly train derailment in Spain illustrates how disaster can alter your mind

Image: Flickr/elentir (Contando Estrelas)

My cousin Guillermo Cassinello Toscano was on the train that derailed in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, last week when it went around a bend at twice the speed limit. Cassinello heard a loud vibration and then a powerful bump and then found himself surrounded by bloody bodies in wagon number nine. Shaking, he escaped the wreckage through either a door or a hole in the train?he cannot recall?then sat amid the smoke and debris next to the track and began to cry. Seventy-nine passengers died.

Cassinello doesn?t remember everything that happened to him. The same mechanisms that kept his brain sharp enough to escape immediate danger may also make it harder for him both to recall the accident, and to put the trauma behind him. "The normal thing is that the person doesn't remember the moment of the accident or right after," says clinical psychologist Javier Rodriguez Escobar of trauma therapy team Grupo Isis in Seville, who helped treat and study victims of the 2004 Madrid train bombings. That's because the mind and the body enter a more alert but also more stressed state, with trade-offs that can save your life, but harm your mind?s memory-making abilities.

As the train fell over, several changes would have swept through Cassinello?s body. His adrenal glands, near his kidneys, would have released adrenaline (also known as epinephrine) into his bloodstream. The adrenaline would have directed blood to the powerful muscles of his arms and legs, where it would help him escape the wreckage faster. The hormone would have raised his heart and breathing rates. It also would have stimulated his vagus nerve, which runs from his spine to his brain. Although adrenaline cannot cross the blood?brain barrier, the vagus can promote noradrenaline production in the brain. That hormone activates the amygdala, which helps form memories.

Just the right amount of noradrenaline, researchers have found, can boost memory storage; too much can destroy it. Figuring out the balance could allow researchers to harness the hormone. Neuroscientist Christa McIntyre at the University of Texas at Dallas and colleagues have been studying how the chemical shapes memory-making in rats (her team is planning a human trial). When the team stimulated rats? vagus nerves the animals? memories improved. McIntyre has to keep the dose low, however, because other experiments have shown that too much noradrenaline appears to impede memory-making. Researchers are still trying to determine whether the excess noradrenaline directly causes the memory lapses or if the hormone is associated with high stress levels that cause some other chemical system to interfere. "That's the part we don't really understand: if there's too much [noradrenaline] or if there's another system that kicks in and puts a brake on it," McIntyre says.

Cassinello's memory lapses may be due to a noradrenaline overflow. But there may be other explanations for the gaps in his memory. His brain may have narrowed his attention at the time of the crash to only those things that matter for survival, such as escaping the train, leading him to ignore things that do not, such as whether the path out of the train passed through a door or a hole. Researchers have shown that humans report selective hearing during stressful events and that stressed people pay attention to different things than do unstressed people (pdf).
