After coming so close, Rangers fall short again

By RONALD BLUM

updated 12:19 a.m. ET Oct. 29, 2011

ST. LOUIS - Oh, so close.

And now it's 51 years and counting with no World Series titles for the Texas Rangers.

A day after twice coming within one strike of champagne, a glittering trophy and a championship parade in Game 6, the Rangers went as dry as an overcooked Texas T-bone in Friday night's finale.

Pitchers Matt Harrison and C.J. Wilson fizzled rather than sizzled, and the St. Louis Cardinals won 6-2 in Game 7 to send the Rangers home as World Series losers for the second straight season.

"It was in our grasp and we didn't get it," manager Ron Washington said. "Tonight we fought hard for it and the Cardinals got it."

Last year, this was a new experience for Texas. The first American League pennant was satisfying, even if the five-game loss to the San Francisco Giants was a disappointment to a franchise searching for success as the expansion Washington Senators through 1971 and the Rangers since the move.

This loss left wounds that will never be forgotten for the oldest Major League Baseball team without a Series title. "2011" will be remembered by Rangers fans, much like "1986" weighed on the memory of the Boston Red Sox until they finally ended their long championship drought in 2004.

Only once before in baseball history had a team come within an out of a Series title and not brought home a championship ? those '86 Red Sox, infamous for Bill Buckner's error.

These Rangers will be remembered for a triple failure, for Neftali Feliz allowing David Freese's tying triple in the ninth inning of Game 6, for Scott Feldman giving up Lance Berkman's tying single in the 10th and for Mark Lowe allowing Freese's game-ending home run in the 11th.

Even the collapses come bigger in Texas.

"I just told them they're champions, which I believe," Washington said. "Someone has to win, someone has to lose and the Cardinals did it. ... They were the better team. They are the world champions. All we can do is come back next year and commit ourselves to it, like they did this year."

In the first Game 7 since 2002, the Rangers spurted to a 2-0 lead against Chris Carpenter, pitching on three days' rest for the second time in his career. Josh Hamilton and Michael Young hit RBI doubles in the first inning, which could have been bigger had not Ian Kinsler stumbled and been picked off first after his leadoff single.

Instead of bringing back Wilson on short rest or starting Derek Holland, who pitched brilliantly in winning Game 4, Washington stayed in rotation and started Harrison.

He couldn't hold the lead, allowing three runs, five hits and two walks in four innings. Feldman and Wilson fouled up the fifth, combining for three walks and two hit batters and allowing two runs without any hits.

"They cleanly beat us," Washington said. "We certainly didn't give them anything."

Freese, the Cardinals' Game 6 star, started the comeback with a tying, two-run double in the first. Allen Craig, starting because Matt Holliday injured his wrist on Thursday, homered for a 3-2 lead in the third, with Nelson Cruz vainly climbing the right-field wall trying to make the catch.

Facing Feldman, Yadier Molina walked with the bases loaded for the second time in two nights, and Wilson forced in another run when he relieved and hit Rafael Furcal on the hip with his first pitch.

That made it 5-2, and the record crowd of 47,399 at Busch Stadium got louder and louder with each Texas out as the Cardinals' 11th World Series title and first since 2006 neared.

Texas pitchers walked a Series-record 41, one more than the 1997 Florida Marlins. Of the Cardinals' 34 runs, 11 reached base on walks and another two on hit batters. Not exactly what Nolan Ryan was looking for when he started to remake the team with strong pitching.

Carpenter, the second pitcher in two decades to make three Series starts, allowed two runs and six hits in six-plus innings with five strikeouts. He finished the Series 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA in three starts and the postseason 4-0 with a 3.25 ERA in five starts. With nine postseason wins, he surpassed Mariano Rivera for the most among active pitchers.

With Wilson eligible for free agency, the Rangers likely will be seeking a new ace. In the ultimate game, Carpenter pitched like an ace and no one on the Rangers did.

When David Murphy flied to left for the final out, St. Louis became the ninth straight home team to win a Game 7. Many of the Rangers leaned forward in the dugout, stunned.

And why was Texas the road team against the wild-card Cardinals, who were 10? games out of a playoff spot on Aug. 25?

The All-Star game decides home-field advantage in the World Series, and Wilson was the loser in that one.

"We'll work hard again," Washington said. "Hopefully if we can stay healthy, we can get back and have another opportunity."

In his first outing on short rest, Carpenter gave up four runs over three innings in Game 2 of the NL division series at Philadelphia. He wasn't sharp at all at the start of this one, either, starting seven of his first 10 batters with balls.

Kinsler singled leading off, then started to steal second on a 1-0 pitch to Elvis Andrus, stumbled and was picked off at first by Molina. Andrus walked, and Hamilton doubled down the right field line for a 1-0 lead.

Young then lofted a soft opposite-field double to right to drive in Hamilton. Carpenter struck out Adrian Beltre and retired Cruz on a groundout to limit the damage.

Harrison then got into trouble with his control with two outs in the bottom half, and the Rangers had Wilson starting to warm up after five batters and 23 pitches.

Albert Pujols walked for the sixth time in the Series, on four pitches, and Berkman walked on five. Freese worked the count full and lined the ball on two hops to the wall in left-center, with Pujols raising both arms in triumph as he crossed the plate. Molina then flied out to Hamilton in front of the fence in center.

Mike Napoli singled leading off the second, and Murphy hit into a forceout. Harrison sacrificed Murphy to third, Kinsler walked and Murphy took third when Pujols dropped a pickoff throw at first from Molina. Carpenter induced Andrus to hit into an inning-ending comebacker.

Furcal singled leading off the bottom half, but Skip Schumaker grounded into a double play on the next pitch. Carpenter hit Beltre on the forearm with a pitch with two outs in the third before retiring Cruz on a flyout.

Kinsler singled leading off the fifth to reach base for the third time, and Andrus sacrificed. Hamilton then hit a foul pop in front of the third-base dugout. Freese, who dropped a popup for an error on Thursday, leaned over and caught it while slipping. Carpenter then struck out Young, pumping both arms in emotion.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa didn't decide on Carpenter instead of a rested Kyle Lohse until Friday morning, waiting until after pitching coach Dave Duncan spoke with his ace.

NOTES: A record 38 of a possible 43 postseason games were played this year. A record 13 were decided by one run, one more than 1995, 1997 and 2003.

Winless New Mexico loses 42-0 to Air Force

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? For the second straight game, New Mexico couldn't even score.

The winless Lobos lost 42-0 Saturday to Air Force, the fifth time this season New Mexico has lost by at least 40 points.

The Lobos (0-8, 0-3) have lost 11 straight loss, including all three under interim coach George Barlow, who replaced the fired Mike Locksley on Sept. 25.

"We went into the game thinking we'd like to have a lot better effort than we had last week," Barlow said. "I thought the effort was better, but a lot of stuff that happened was self-inflicted with the penalties, the turnovers and I thought we needed to do a better job of getting off the field the times that we got them in third-down situations."

Instead, it was just more of the same for New Mexico against the Falcons (4-4, 1-3).

"Everyone is mad," New Mexico running back Crusoe Gongbay, who led the team in rushing with 63 yards on 10 carries. "Mad after every game."

It's not the way the freshman envisioned his college career beginning.

"It's definitely different and frustrating," he said. "I thought I was coming into something that was going to be on the uplift but that isn't the case."

New Mexico linebacker Carmen Messina, who had season-high 15 tackles, said the team is struggling with its morale.

"It is definitely frustrating and a lot of heads are down," he said. "But is the seniors' jobs to keep heads up and keep them focused."

The Lobos did have two chances to score in the fourth quarter, but James Aho missed field goals from 30 and 40 yards.

Air Force, however, scored touchdowns the first two times it had the ball, and recovered a muffed punt on its next possession, leading to another score.

Mike DeWitt had a career-high four touchdowns for Air Force.

Backup quarterback Connor Dietz directed the offense in the absence of injured starter Tim Jefferson, finishing with a game-high 87 yards on six carries, including a 39-yard touchdown run just before halftime that gave Air Force a 35-0 lead.

Ubergizmo's Gaming Digest #2: Battlefield 3, Uncharted 3, Modern ...

The gaming news world moves fast. Every day, thousands of nuggets of new gaming info drips out like a leaky faucet. We understand that most people don?t have the time to keep up with every single gaming blog, but what the to stay on top of the most important news. In addition to the gaming coverage that we bring to you daily, we?re dishing out a weekly feature that?ll keep you informed of the latest and greatest happening, so you can go into the weekend after a hard worked week and just game.

With the launch of Battlefield 3, it?s been a fantastic week to be a hardcore game on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360. But if you don?t care for first-person shooters, fret not, because there?s plenty of Nintendo Wii and PS Vita news that broke out this week. Join us inside for this week?s best gaming news.

Game of the Week: Battlefield 3

It?s without competition that this week?s must-have/must-buy game is the one and only Battlefield 3 developed by DICE and published by EA. It goes up against Activision?s Call of Duty franchise and so far, things are looking pretty good. The FPS managed to get a respectable 90/100 on Metacritic?for PC, 84 on Xbox 360 and 85 on PS3. However you wish to perceive the game, the writing is clear on the wall: the singleplayer mode leaves much to be desired but the multiplayer is where the action is at. I?m giving it an initial run on Xbox 360, so we?ll see how it goes. Definitely download the texture pack if you haven?t. It?s a must for the 360.

PlayStation 3

We?re only days away from Nathan Drake?s latest installment of Uncharted 3: Drake?s Deception ? it launches on Monday, November 1. Things are already looking pretty swell for Naughty Dog?s action adventure game. Early reviews have totaled its Metacritic score?to a 94/100, making it one of the PS3?s best games yet. It supports stereoscopic 3D. Naughty Dog originally experimented with implementing PlayStation Move support into the game, but ultimately decided against it, saying that tacked on motion controls just didn?t feel right for Uncharted. While we agree that motion control doesn?t always fit, it did work quite well for Socom 4 and Resistance 3 ? perhaps they?ll have a change of heart for an update that patches support in.

If you?re interesting in the technology, here?s a great look at the motion capture techniques behind Uncharted 3. It?s quite fascinating stuff.

Xbox 360

Fighting fans are in for a treat with Namco Bandai?s Soul Calibur IV coming out next January. Hardcore fighting games require arcade sticks, not game pads. That?s where MadCatz steps in to fill the gap. Coinciding with Soul Calibur IV?s release, MadCatz is releasing the FightStick Tournament Edition. It?s ideal for the PS3 and Xbox 360 and if it?s anywhere as well built as the fighting stick that came with Tekken 6 Limited Edition (I picked one up for $35 on Amazon during the summer), it should provide should be able to withstand a good amount of button mashing.

Nintendo Wii / Wii U

Aside from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, the Wii is looking a little dry. That?s okay because the console is already on its way out. Next year, we get the Wii U and Iwata promised in a recent investors meeting that Nintendo has learned from its mistakes in executing the 3DS?s launch. The Wii U?s final form factor will be shown off at next year?s E3 expo in June, which pegs a release for what?s almost assuredly going to be the holiday shopping season.

Nintendo says it?s not going to repeat the same mistake it did with the 3DS?s lack of games at launch. Here?s to hoping the Wii U delivers with games people will actually care about, like Mario, Zelda and Pokemon.

PC Gaming

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Those itching to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will have to wait for when the game officially launches on November 8, but a few thieves managed to get their hands on Disc 2 of the PC version of Activision?s latest in the franchise. But, they won?t be playing it.

Activision isn?t taking the theft lightly. In fact, they?ve sent police investigators to hunt down those with the pirated copies and slap them with a $5,000 fine as well as repossess the stolen property. As they say, crime doesn?t pay.

Last week?s major release was of course Batman Arkham City and what better way to cross-promote the game than with Samsung?s new 830 SSD drives. There?s no magic trick here. Just buy Samsung 830 SSD in sizes ranging from 64-512GB and you?ll get a free download code for the PC version of Batman: Arkham City. Why should you go SSD? Way faster loading times.

Mobile / Portable

Nintendo 3DS eShop

After reporting nearly $1 billion in annual losses for the first time in 30 year, Nintendo is getting eve more serious about its 3DS. In a surprising move, Nintendo is opening up its eShop digital wares storefront and expanding it to allow users to access it from a PC and a smartphone. You won?t get to buy directly from those channels, but you?ll get to browse, which should at least expand the visibility of Nintendo?s digital downloads.

Sony PlayStation Vita Early First Edition Bundle

Last week, Sony blew the lid off the official release date for the PS Vita in the U.S. ? February 22 ? and now it?s trying to bait in PlayStation fans with a ?First Edition Bundle? that?ll give you the next-gen handheld a whole week early on February 15. For $350, you?ll get a 3G model of the PS Vita, a 4GB proprietary PS Vita memory card, a limited edition case and a copy of Little Deviants. Is getting it early worth the extra cash? We?ll let you decide how big of Sony fan you are.

Adobe Flash logo

Also in Vita news, Japanese magazine Famitsu broke news that the handheld?s browser will not support Adobe Flash at launch, but will run Javascript 1.7 and HTML5. Considering the Vita has a quad-core processor and 512MB of RAM, we?re not sure what?s going on. As an owner of a PSP, I can attest that the inadequate amount of RAM on the original handheld greatly hampered Flash performance. What?s Sony?s excuse now?

It?s arguable what is the best looking game on a tablet and most will say it?s Epic?s Infinity Blade, but there?s a new contender in town and it?s Shadowgun. It?s kind of like a Gears of War rip off and in my opinion (played iPad version) gameplay is pretty barebones, stale and repetitive with the onscreen analogs feeling like a huge miss rather than a hit and its cover-system completely ripped from Gears, but boy is the game a looker. It?s available now on the Android Market, so if you?re looking to test a new game, make it this one.

Perry: Obama's lost standing on foreign policy

(AP) ? GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry says President Barack Obama hasn't listened to his commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan, and that's cost him credibility as commander in chief.

Obama has announced that U.S troops would leave Iraq by the end of the year, effectively ending the war that began under the administration of President George W. Bush.

Perry tells "Fox News Sunday" that making those plans public endangers troops still in Iraq. The Texas governor says Obama has "lost his standing" as a commander in chief.

The president has said the death of Libya's Moammar Gadhafi and the end of the Iraq war are reminders of America's renewed leadership in the world.

Justin Bieber Cuts Off a Cop, Gets Pulled Over

Justin Bieber really needs to practice what he preaches.

The 17-year old filmed a PSA this summer based around vehicular safety, in this case the dangers of texting while driving.

But he has since gotten into an accident that may have been the result of street racing; and he was pulled over yesterday after actually cutting off a California Highway Patrol Officer.

Justin Bieber Video Photo

TMZ first reported the story (and has posted photos of Bieber's ridiculous ride, a custom-made Cadillac with "JB" on the side panel and Batman symbols on the front and back): Justin was leading a three-car motorcade, which included Sean Kingston in a Rolls Royce, when the incident occurred.

All three vehicles were pulled over, but the police merely issued a warning and Bieber was on his way. To safer driving, let's hope.

Come on, JB, at least think of the Internet. It might literally explode if anything happened to you.

HP to announce ARM-based servers next month, throw Intel a curveball

Sources close to Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal say that HP is primed to help ARM wrestle its way into the server game next month, citing unannounced plans that may challenge Intel's corner on the market. HP is said to be working with Calxeda, an outfit with dreams of outclassing today's servers by selling OEMs an ARM-based system on a chip that can be used to build high performance racks with low energy footprints. ARM, HP and Calxeda all declined to comment, although a spokesperson for Calxeda mentioned that it has a product release event scheduled for November 1st. Intel doesn't seem too concerned, and told the Wall Street Journal that ARM architecture still had a few hurdles to jump before it was ready for the server game. "We believe the best-performing platform will win." Spoken like a true sportsman, Intel. Game on.

Nokia Asha 200, Asha 300 and Asha 303 hands-on (video)

You know, Nokia wasn't only firing its first Windows Phone salvo -- there was also a volley of Series 40 handsets, with the Asha family. First up is the dual-SIM capable Nokia 200. The phone itself bears a strong resemblance to the C3-00, with a non-touchable screen and QWERTY keyboard, priced, pre-tax, at €60 (about $85). Nokia promises admirable battery-life and a rainbow of color choices.

Up next is the Nokia 300, pairing a 2.4-inch resistive touchscreen with a numbered keypad, with a long narrow frame very similar to last year's Nokia C3, but now toting a 1GHz processor, five megapixel shooter and a €85 (about $120) bounty. Meanwhile, €115 (about $160) will net you the Nokia 303, which brings together both touchscreen and QWERTY input and rocks a 3.2 megapixel camera. While Nokia's first Windows Phones remain the stars of the show, these sub-$200 prices and pre-2012 arrival will tempt residual Series 40 fans still out there. Skip on past the break for a brimful of Asha.
