Using chitosan core-shell nanoparticle for breast cancer treatment

Home > Press > Using chitosan core-shell nanoparticle for breast cancer treatment

Abstract:
Researchers at National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC) and King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) have successfully developed a target drug delivery system using folate-conjugated pluronic F127/chitosan core-shell nanoparticles to deliver doxorubicin (DOX) to target cancer cells focusing on breast cancer.

Pathumthani, Thailand | Posted on May 31st, 2012

"DOX is one of the most commonly used chemotherapeutic agents for cancer treatment including breast cancer. However, DOX is also considered a poor soluble drug that is toxic to healthy tissues" said Dr. Nuttaporn Pimpha, a NANOTEC researcher at Hybrid Nanostructure and Nanocomposite. "By using core-shell nanoparticles from folate-conjugated pluronic F127/chitosan we were able to develop a delivery vector that has greater targeting ability, chemical stability and lower cytotoxicity".

As in many developing countries, cancer in Thailand is becoming a significant health problem. Cervix and breast cancer is the leading cause of death in Thai women. The only commercial DOX - encapsulated liposome available is Doxil. However, Doxil has a short half-life in microcirculation and is unstable in the blood stream. Hence there is a need to find a more controlled and stable DOX carrier system.

The researchers reported their work in a paper published by the Journal of Nanomaterials.

Eating raisins resulted in significantly fewer calories consumed as compared to other popular snacks

FRESNO, Calif., May 31, 2012 New research recently announced at the Canadian Nutrition Society annual meeting in Vancouver, B.C., suggests eating raisins as an after-school snack prevents excessive calorie intake and increases satiety or feeling of fullness as compared to other commonly consumed snacks.

The study, funded by a grant from the California Raisin Marketing Board, was conducted among 26 normal-weight boys and girls ages 8 11 during a three-month timeframe. Study participants were randomly assigned to eat raisins or other snacks, including grapes, potato chips or chocolate chip cookies, until they were comfortably full. Additionally, each child received the same standardized breakfast, morning snack and lunch on test days. Subjective appetite was measured before and immediately after snack consumption at 15-minute intervals. Key study findings include:

  • Food intake following raisin consumption was lower and satiation greater compared to the other snacks
  • When eating raisins, children consumed significantly fewer calories when compared to the other snacks in the study
  • Grapes, potato chips and cookies resulted in ~ 56 percent, 70 percent and 108 percent higher calorie intake compared to raisins, respectively
  • Cumulative calorie intake (breakfast + morning snack + lunch + after-school snack) was 10 percent 19 percent lower after raisins compared to other snacks
  • Although all snacks reduced subjective appetite, desire-to-eat was lowest after consuming raisins

The study was conducted by lead researcher, G. Harvey Anderson, Ph.D., Professor of Nutritional Sciences and Physiology, Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto and co-investigated by Nick Bellissimo, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, School of Nutrition, Ryerson University and Bohdan Luhovyy, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Applied Human Nutrition, Mount Saint Vincent University.

"To our knowledge, this is the first controlled study that looks at after-school snacking and satiety among children," said Anderson. "We found consumption of raisins as a snack prevented excessive calorie intake, increased the feeling of fullness, and thereby may help contribute to the maintenance of a healthy weight in school-age children."

New Webinar Explains How to Integrate Video Interviews into the ...

Columbus (PRWEB) May 11, 2012

Video interviewing will never replace a face-to-face final interview that ensures a potential employee is the right fit for a company?s culture. But it?s an extremely valuable tool to find top talent faster and improve the overall quality of hires.

Dave Hoy, founder of MBA Focus, and Randy Bitting, CEO of InterviewStream, will headline a new webinar on Tuesday, May 15 at 12 noon EST to discuss how to integrate video interviewing into your current recruitment processes. The webinar is hosted by MBA Focus in partnership with InterviewStream, two of the leaders in video interviewing and recruitment technology.

Employers will learn that even though video interviewing will never replace the handshake, it should be an integral part of every company?s recruitment process. The goal of the webinar is to introduce the five questions every employer should ask before implementing a video interviewing strategy; how to use pre-recorded video interviews for screening candidates; how to build a positive, branded candidate experience using video interviewing; and time-saving tips and techniques for on-campus recruitment.

Registrations are open until midnight EST on May 14. Sign up now at https://www.mbafocus.com/Webinar.aspx.

According to Marie Larsen, writer for Recruiter.com, ?the reason video interviewing is going to hit it big is that it provides the most basic, simple, important fix imaginable: it saves money.?

Video interviewing isn?t just beneficial to employers ? it?s also convenient for candidates. In a recent SoloCup survey of students who were interviewed using InterviewStream?s pre-recorded video interviewing, 97 percent found the interview platform convenient to complete.

Video interviewing has already been widely adopted by universities, to assist in their campus recruiting efforts; executive recruiting firms, to sort through candidates from around the world; and large corporations, to screen candidates in remote locations.

?Virtual face-to-face conversations are now a common activity in the office and at home,? says Randy Bitting, CEO of InterviewStream. ?With recent advances in technology leading to more widespread use of video calls and video conferences in everyday life, the video interview has become a much more comfortable and familiar experience.?

But it wasn?t always so prevalent. Despite existing for nearly a decade ? Skype was released in 2003, and InterviewStream was founded in 2003 ? video interviewing wasn?t truly adopted until the 2008-2009 recession. During that time, 52 percent of companies expected to decrease hiring, travel budgets were slashed, and companies and career service offices were forced to do more with less.

Other benefits of video interviewing include: increasing recruiting productivity, improving quality of hire, eliminating or significantly reducing travel costs, reducing CO2 emissions, building stronger relationships earlier in the interview process, and removing time barriers associated with international recruitment.

About MBA Focus:

MBA Focus is the market leader in MBA recruiting connecting leading employers with the world?s top-ranked graduate business schools. Their exclusive school partnerships and

industry-leading recruitment management technology products make them the #1 choice of companies seeking top MBA talent.

About InterviewStream:

InterviewStream is the original provider of pre-recorded and live video interviewing solutions. Their product suite of proprietary online technology provides video interview solutions to hundreds of employers, executive search firms, staffing firms, and the world?s leading global career transition firm.

(AP) ? Roughly two years ago, the Los Angeles Kings and New Jersey Devils were the finalists in the free-agent market battle for Ilya Kovalchuk.

The Devils won the right to keep the high-scoring Russian with a bid of $102 million.

Wednesday night, the teams will start fighting for a much bigger prize, the Stanley Cup. In this contest, skill, heart and desire will decide the outcome. Nothing else.

And it doesn't matter that the Devils and Kings aren't the two teams most experts expected to be left standing after three rounds of the playoffs.

"You hear it every year, but it doesn't get old: Once you make it in, you have a chance to get here," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "I think that's one thing that the prognosticators don't consider. I always put it this way, when the playoffs start, the clocks should be reset. Because everyone's starting over, and all 16 teams have a shot to win it all.

"I think both teams would agree with that this year."

Led by Kovalchuk and a 40-year-old Martin Brodeur, the Devils are just the second No. 6 seed to reach the finals. The 2004 Calgary Flames, coached by Sutter, were the other.

Riding the goaltending of Jonathan Quick, the Kings overcame even bigger obstacles. They are only the second No. 8 seed to make it since the conference-based NHL playoff format was introduced in 1993-94. The Edmonton Oilers were the first in 2006.

"It's all about winning here, and eliminating distractions and doing what it takes to be successful," said Brodeur, who led the Devils to Cups in 1995, 2000 and 2003. "That's worked for us this year, and really my entire career. For me, to be a part of that is great. To come to the rink every day during my career, knowing we had a chance to win every night is something special.

"I've had that my whole career here, and that's been a great ride."

While this isn't a glamour series that boasts the likes of a Sidney Crosby, a Steven Stamkos or even a Henrik Lundqvist, it has elements that should help the NHL, and prove entertaining on the ice.

To start, this is an East-West series featuring two of the nation's biggest media markets: Los Angeles and the New York metropolitan area.

The Kings and Devils also present great story lines.

Los Angeles, which heavily courted Kovalchuk in free agency, is making only its second appearance in the Cup finals, having lost in 1993 to Montreal. The Kings are back after a midseason shake-up that saw Sutter replace Terry Murray just before Christmas and a late trade that added skilled scorer Jeff Carter to the lineup. Still, they didn't clinch a playoff berth until the final week of the season.

The Kings have been virtually unstoppable since then. They have posted a 12-2 record in the playoffs and knocked off the three top seeds in the Western Conference ? Vancouver, St. Louis and Phoenix. They have never trailed in a series, winning the first three games in each round.

"Everybody's just clicking," Kings defenseman Drew Doughty said. "People are used to playing with their linemates now. The lines have been the same from the last part of the season. D pairings are the same. It's just getting used to them. Everyone is playing with confidence. Once you start clicking like that, pucks start going in the net for you."

The Devils' story is just as good. They missed the playoffs last season despite retaining Kovalchuk with a $102 million contract that the league said violated its letter of the law. Few expected them to recover this quickly, especially with Brodeur seemingly on his last legs after a sub-par season, and captain Zach Parise returning from a major knee injury. When top center Travis Zajac blew out an Achilles tendon before training camp, the chances of Devils making the finals seemed slim.

Guess again.

New Jersey won its final six games in the regular season, rallied from 3-2 deficit in the opening round of the playoffs with two overtime wins against Florida, and then eliminated the Flyers and Rangers, their two biggest rivals, in five and six games, respectively.

"Last year was tough," said Kovalchuk, who said there was never a doubt in his mind that he would stay in New Jersey. "But we made sure it paid off. We have a great coaching staff, great players here, great group of guys, very close to each other. I think that makes a big difference."

The other thing that should be great is the goaltending.

The 26-year-old Quick leads playoff netminders in goals-against average (1.54) and save percentage (.946). He has eight road wins in as many starts, posting a 1.55 goals-against average and .948 save percentage in those games.

Brodeur is a four-time Vezina Trophy winner. He has played in 24 career Stanley Cup finals games, posting a 15-9 record with a 1.91 goals-against, losing only a series to Colorado in seven games in 2001. The Montreal native is set to become the fifth goaltender in NHL history and first since Jacques Plante in 1970 to appear in the Stanley Cup finals after his 40th birthday:

"Well, everyone knows what he's meant to the league and this team, and where he stands in history," Quick said of the NHL's winningest goaltender. "For me, it's not about me against him. It's about the Kings and the Devils."

The Devils and Kings are very similar in their approaches. Both want to establish the forecheck, create pressure and have it lead to offense. The Kings, who posted a 25-13-11 regular-season record after Sutter took over, are definitely a little bigger than the Rangers, and they certainly have more depth.

Devils defenseman Peter Harrold played five seasons with the Kings before signing with New Jersey this year. He spent the majority of this season at Albany of the AHL, before being inserted into the Devils' postseason rotation. He said both organizations stress team first.

"Everything is about the collective, not the individuals," said Harrold, who says this series will be good for hockey. "It's two really big stages.

"That's what you want to grow the game."

The largest stars die in explosions more powerful than anyone thought possible?some triggered in part by the production of antimatter

In Brief

  • In recent years several supernovae have turned out to be more powerful and long-lasting than any observed before.
  • Archival images showed that the stars that gave rise to some supernovae were about 100 times as massive as the sun: according to accepted theory, stars this big were not supposed to explode.
  • Some supernovae may have been ther?mo?nuclear explosions triggered by the creation of pairs of particles of matter and antimatter.
  • The first generation of stars in the universe, which created the materials that later formed planets, may have exploded through a similar mechanism.

In the middle of 2005 the W. M. Keck observatory on Mauna Kea in Hawaii completed an upgrade of one of its giant twin telescopes. By automatically correcting for atmospheric turbulence, the instrument could now produce images as sharp as those from the Hubble Space Telescope. Shrinivas Kulkarni of the California Institute of Technology urged young Caltech researchers?myself among them?to apply for observing time. Once the rest of the astronomy community realized how terrific the telescopes were, he warned us, securing a slot would become very competitive.

Taking this advice, I teamed up with my then fellow postdocs Derek Fox and Doug Leonard to attempt a type of study that previously had been carried out almost solely with the Hubble: hunting for supernova progenitors. In other words, we wanted to know what stars look like when they are about to explode.

Christine Marinoni and Cynthia Nixon: Married!

Former Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon is now a married woman.

The actress exchanged vows over the weekend with Christine Marinoni, the woman to whom she got engaged three years ago during a rally to support same-sex marriage in New York. A bill allowing for just that was passed in the summer of 2011.

Christine Marinoni and Cynthia Nixon Photo

Confirms Nixon's rep to People:

"On May 27, 2012, Cynthia Nixon and her girlfriend, Christine Marinoni, were legally married in the state of New York. Nixon wore a custom dress by Carolina Herrera."

Nixon - who has two children from a previous relationship and one with Marinoni, an education activist - created a stir earlier this year when she said homosexuality is a choice. She then went on to amend the statement and explain she was only referring to her own experience.

Skin Cancer and Seniors | Comfort Keepers

The danger of developing skin cancer is something people have become more aware of over the years. Gone are the days of soaking in baby oil and iodine, worshipping the sun, and bronzing skin to get those glorified tan lines. As skin cancer awareness has steadily increased over the years, many people have replaced tanning lotion with sunscreen, while exercising caution when spending time in the sun.

While it is never too late to begin protecting your skin from damaging UV rays, experts say sunburns experienced early in life can cause skin cancer in later years. However, damage caused by the sun?s rays is cumulative, spanning a person?s entire lifetime in the sun. Knowing this, it may not be surprising to learn that cases of skin cancer among seniors are more prevalent than in the younger population.Photo of senior

Skin cancer among seniors is a serious matter. In fact, research indicates that over 50% of deaths associated with skin cancer occur in people over the age of 65. Perhaps this is because some older adults, unaware of the sun?s continuous damaging rays, think the danger of skin cancer is not as high as they age. But it is critical that seniors protect their skin from the sun as aging skin loses its ability to protect itself. Additionally, current sun exposure further harms ?old? sun damage, and inhibits the skin?s ability to protect it from cancer. It also may become harder to detect clues of cancer on the skin as the skin matures with aging. Wrinkles and decreased elasticity due to aging change the overall appearance of skin. Age spots, dryness and other skin conditions seniors suffer make it harder to detect abnormal cancerous lesions.?

Seniors who develop melanoma are not as likely to have a good prognosis as younger generations may be. Early detection of melanoma can literally mean the difference between life and death. Any signs of moles that are raised, change in shape, have jagged edges, discolorations, or signs of bleeding should be viewed by a doctor immediately. Other skin abnormalities should be checked out with a doctor, as well.

While not all skin cancer lesions are malignant, it is important as a person ages to be proactive in detecting skin cancer. Regular self-examinations of moles and other skin spots are crucial. Yearly appointments with a healthcare professional to examine all moles on the body are essential.

The New Math of Renewable Energy: $50 = $100

By David Kreutzer, Ph.D. ~

Suppose you could produce $50 of electricity but it cost you $100 to do so. Would that make any sense? It would if you work at the White House.

In a speech at a wind-turbine blade manufacturer in Iowa, President Obama called for extending two sets of subsidies that turn energy economics upside down and force higher costs on consumers and taxpayers.

The first extension is for the production tax credit (PTC), which is set to expire at the end of the year. It provides wind-energy producers with a subsidy of about 40 percent of the wholesale cost of electricity. So, when a wind-energy producer sells $50 worth of electricity, Uncle Sam adds another $20 for a total revenue of $70 to the producer.

The second extension is for the Advanced Energy Manufacturing Credit?originally funded in President Obama?s ?stimulus? bill. This 30 percent credit cuts the cost of $100 worth of equipment to just $70.

So there you have it. Fifty dollars of actual revenue is bumped up to $70 with the PTC and $100 of costs are cut to $70 after the special tax credit. That is, $50 = $100 after taxpayers make up the difference.

When wind-energy advocates claim that wind power is on the verge of being competitive, they mean that after the PTC and the manufacturing credit, wind is almost, maybe someday soon, or maybe later (and only if you ignore transmission costs and fickleness of supply problems) on par with conventional power. What a deal.

Perhaps not all of the costs of the wind farm will qualify for the manufacturing credit, but don?t despair. There is more. Many states and regions have renewable power mandates that force consumers to buy renewable electricity?regardless of costs. So there is almost no limit to how expensive renewable electricity can be and still generate a profit for the supplier.

And even that?s not all. Many renewable energy projects and manufacturers receive federal loan guarantees that cut millions of dollars off their costs. In green-energy math, $50 may be greater than $100.

No matter how slick the financial shell games may be?subsidies on top of subsidies on top of mandates?overpriced electricity cannot boost the economy. It may seem like a boost if you are the one getting the subsidy?at least for a while. The workers at the Iowa plant better hope their presidential green-energy photo op works out better for them than it did for Solyndra?s employees.

5 Simple Tips To Spot Unethical Debt Management Companies ...

As a consumer you need to be both careful and strategic when checking out debt management possibilities. There are many financial products out there to help you with your financial recovery, with debt management being one of the most popular consumer choices.

An ethical established debt management company can help you the customer to turn your life back around. This is assuming that they have your best interests at heart. Although the industry in Britain has been investigated, it is still possible to encounter an unethical debt management company but if you follow these five steps you should avoid this.

Unavailable Counsellors

If you find that the debt counsellors are unavailable this can of course be genuine, but in quite a few cases this lack of availability can be a bad sign. Combined with some of the other signs you will read about, it should ring alarm bells in your head.

However it is really the opposite you should be hoping for, because a decent company will want to ensure you understand all aspects of what you may be committing yourself to.

Lack Of Information

If you find that the company is not giving you fee information upfront then be super wary! There may be fees disguised in the small print, and fees that they fail to mention. Do not be afraid to follow up on this issue and now that you?ve made the decision to use a specialist, don?t panic and go with an unethical choice.

As you are making a life altering decision avoid companies who demonstrate a weird attitude about giving information.

Comments Which Are Negative

There should be customer comments around online so please take a short time to read these. You will want to be guided by the experience of others.

It?s unlikely you?d stay in a hotel that your family had said was dirty!

Very High Fees

Before signing anything ensure you are comfortable with the fee structure. You can do this by comparing to a few other companies.

Poor Service

Service should not be below average or poor. This is not going to help your situation and doesn?t generally reflect much professionalism. Analyse your true feelings alongside the reviews of the company. If you?re still good to go, then continually monitor the service and progress during these next months.

One of the ethical companies is Abbot & Edwards. They have helped many people like you with excellent, ethical debt management services. If you feel worried call them today on 0800 533 5444. Also a great unbiased source of financial advice for debt management information and heaps more.

Kim Morgan: The Wonderful Wistful World of Wes Anderson

Margot1

Recently, The Guardian's film blog ran a small piece highlighting the trailer for Wes Anderson's upcoming -- and for Anderson fans, greatly anticipated -- Moonrise Kingdom (which I haven't seen but will review soon). With perhaps a mixture of love and mockery, the writer checked off the usual Anderson tropes: "Every box is ticked: Schwartzman, Murray, pint-sized precocity, a retro palette, distracted dads, slo-mo hand-holding, fab hats, dead-centre deadpan," and then asked readers to weigh in on what they thought. As you can imagine, opinions were split between excitement and annoyance. One of the more amusing comments came from a reader who stated, "You can tell this is a discussion about Wes Anderson movies when it boils down to the fact that he's definitely using a different font this time."Ah, yes, Anderson's attention to detail -- the clothes, the pastel colors, the walkie- talkies, megaphones and record players, the ... Dalmatian mice.

Moonrise-kingdom-poster-thumb

Those things that many critics have decried as an addiction to quirk, annoyingly twee, an overly precious and obnoxious palette that values style over substance -- a critique that's decidedly more tired and lazy than anything Wes Anderson's ever done.

Tumblr_m35q20OIDb1qejxkuo1_1280

In fact, nothing Wes Anderson creates is lazy. Even when you spy a cinematic reference (I see it most in Hal Ashby's Harold and Maude -- particuarly the "Trouble" sequence), there's always a twist. It takes an aggressive stylist, innovative soul and industrious spirit to create Margot Tenenbaum, raccoon eyeliner, mink coat, Izod dress, missing finger and all. She is singular Anderson (you actually forget Gwyneth Paltrow is playing her), not only for her personal style, but for her bittersweet beauty, her sad, fatherless childhood, her past triumphs, future failures and her deadpan demeanor, something that fills his frame so perfectly that she becomes overwhelmingly touching. I challenge anyone to get through Nico's "These Days" without, at least once, thinking of Margot Tenenbaum stepping off the Green Line bus. And yet, she's likable, intelligent and funny too. In short, she is style and substance. She's not merely a cardboard cut-out of quirk -- she's an interesting, mysterious woman, and nothing you've seen in any other film, and she's now so iconic that no other filmmaker could create her. She practically carries her own copyright. And yet, we recognize her, somewhere, in some kind of buried childhood memory.

Which leads me to one essential element of Wes Anderson: nostalgia. And not just nostalgia for nostalgia's sake, collecting memories like Star Wars action figures encased in original packaging, never to be played with. No, he's getting at something deeper and more melancholic: those feelings of childhood that are both beautiful and painful because we can only access them through memories, pictures, music and our father's clunky old dial phone (something you'll see in an Anderson movie, no matter what year it is).

Midnight

Recently I re-watched Midnight Cowboy, and became misty over, not just the tragic story and of course Harry Nilsson's beautiful "Everybody's Talkin,'" but that the picture brought me back to a childhood memory that was both in touch with and removed from reality. I had to question where that flood of memories were coming from: Watching the movie at home from school on TV? The idea of that kind of New York City -- the New York I never experienced because the movie was released before I was born -- but those who lived there certainly did experience? And harshly remember? And then, the gentle, nearly child-like love of these two men that I figured, even at my young age, was also sexual? As gritty as Midnight Cowboy is, it does have an innocence about it. And though it's far grimier than anything Wes Anderson has ever created, I thought of Anderson. Joe Buck and Ratso Rizzo could fit into Anderson's universe, albeit with a different kind of ending. John Schlesinger's bus death is more grindingly,?powerfully tragic than any of Anderson's mournful finales, but I can see Joe Buck getting on with with his life in an Anderson-like Florida too. I love that that there was no direct homage (save for, maybe, Owen Wilson's cowboy-clad Eli Cash in The Royal Tenenbaums) that brought me to that thought. It was a swirling cinematic idea and repressed childhood memory, but pushed to the present by Anderson in cohoots with myself. It almost sounds insane. Ah, the magic of movies.

The_darjeeling_limited_movie_image_adrien_brody__jason_schwartzman_and_owen_wilson

It's not surprising that most of Anderson's adults act much like children -- or rather, act like what we, as children, might have imagined we'd be like as adults. We'd hail dented gypsy cabs in New York, travel on the Darjeeling Limited (for me and my love of train travel this was extra special) with our siblings or, as in The Life Aquatic, become Jacques Cousteau Zissou explorers, calling our competition "my nemesis." It's a lovely presage that the book Max Fischer checks out in Rushmore is "Diving for Sunken Treasure" by Jacques Cousteau.

Diving-for-sunken-treasure

That's not to say Anderson's films are adolescent. There's too much adult reflection and seriousness within his meticulously art-directed frames. Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) may be a lovable, nattily dressed deadbeat dad, but he's also, eventually, a regretful man who truly loves his family. The shot of the one son who resents him most, the business-minded, now excessively safety-oriented Chaz (a red tracksuit-clad Ben Stiller), sitting teary-eyed with a vulnerable and dying Royal in the back of an ambulance hits the viewer with such a powerful punch that you are smacked into the reality of loss. It's so emotional that, for some of us, you can feel it in your stomach and without warning, you spontaneously sob. Your dad may have been horrible, but he's still your dad. That's not just style. And though it's universal, particuarly among so many kids of divorce, it's not easy sentimentality either.

Luke_wilson_gwyneth_paltrow_ben_stiller_gene_hackman_the_royal_tenenbaums_001

But back to his style and signature. Anderson loves his slow-mo shots (and montages) set to music (and with great taste -- the Kinks, the Who, Brian Jones-era Rolling Stones, Love, David Bowie, David Bowie in Portuguese, Nico) to the point where it drives some viewers crazy. Or, in the case of an Indian boy's funeral in The Darjeeling Limited, offends them (I don't agree with that critique and find the slow-mo during that tragic moment powerful, allowing us to drink in all of what's happening -- for all of the characters). Anderson's slow-mo has become so recognizable that a savvy YouTuber created a video comprised of Wes Anderson slo-mo shots, all set to Ja Rule. I have no problem with Ja Rule, but it's not quite the same as Max Fischer emerging from an elevator to the Who's "A Quick One, While He's Away."

2010feb24_035_1

And then there's the God's-eye view. Anderson adores that shot with an almost fervid fetishization tantamount to Hitchcock's love of blondes. Books, letters, laminated lists, even Richie Tenenbaum's bleeding, suicidal wrists are shot from above. For me, each method serves its purpose with potent panache. A slow-mo allows us to drink in the scene and even feel placed in the action. The omnispective POV has us floating above it, like a memory. Who stamps library books anymore? It's perfect to view this outdated act from above, like how we often dream -- out of body: something dislodged, both spatially and temporally, from the past.

245796914_640

It's interesting, then, that Anderson's still startlingly wonderful debut feature, Bottle Rocket, finds his most compelling character planning for the future. Owen Wilson's Dignan has listed a detailed 50-year plan of goals for his small crew (namely his best friend Anthony, played by his brother Luke) that involves petty criminal shenanigans, like robbing a book store (with unfortunate small bags), family homes ("You took the earrings, Dignan? ") and a cold-storage facility, leading to Dignan's valiant efforts to save crew member Apple Jack, and to his swift arrest. Though Anderson would go further with set design and detail, Dignan is an Anderson (and Wilson) creation through and through -- his defining moment in which viewers were absolutely disarmed by a character and actor (Wilson brought a unique style and wit that has been part of Anderson's universe since). And further, in an era of Tarantino rip-offs (the 1990s), we were absolutely struck by the movie's inherent sweetness.

600px-Botrock-can2-1

Dignan, like Anderson, is thoroughly well-organized, micromanaging the kind of world he wants to live in, from his yellow jumpsuit (he's ordered a dozen of them) to the correct way Anthony should escape from a mental institution. And yet, in the real world, Dignan, like all of us, just can't achieve that kind of perfection, which by film's end is overwhelmingly poignant. The ever-enthusiastic Dignan (no matter what) jokes (perhaps half-jokes) from the prison yard something like an action movie shoot: "Here are just a few of the key ingredients: dynamite, pole vaulting, laughing gas, choppers -- can you see how incredible this is going to be? -- hang gliding, come on!" Is this Dignan? Or Wes Anderson? Pity Dignan couldn't have become a movie director. And, damn. Dignan's final bit of goofy bravery set to "2000 Man" -- it's so funny and beautiful and sad and perfect: "They'll never catch me... because I'm fucking innocent."?

So, back to Anderson's critics. When J.D. Salinger passed away, I wrote a piece for MSN and here about his influence on cinema (even as Salinger, save for one bad attempt, never wanted any movies made of his work). Wes Anderson was a major part of that piece, and I pointed out that critics of Salinger slapped Anderson with similar derision. Both have been called overly precious, overly privileged and overly adoring of characters living in a vacuum of nostalgia and sweetness, dislocated from reality. Well, what, exactly, is wrong with nostalgia and sweetness? Particularly if it's crafted with genuine heart and individual ?clat?

And Anderson's distinct dislocation, inertia and wistfulness -- from the Tenenbaums to the Foxes -- is part of the point. When Anderson sets it beautifully, like when Margot and Richie Tenenbaum tearfully discuss his suicide attempt and profess their love for each other in their tent while listening to the Stones' "She Smiled Sweetly," Anderson allows the record to keep playing, and so when we hear, up next, "Ruby Tuesday," the entire moment is filled with such bittersweet beauty, that you can't help but be moved -- and not by a suicide necessarily -- more a memory of a perfect little moment.

We do have those in life -- even when they're sad ones. As Henry Allen wrote in his remembrance of Salinger, "Hemingway was a writer who made unhappiness beautiful. Salinger took it a step further -- with the same uncanny ability to evoke the world his characters move through, he made it a virtue." The same could be said of Anderson. That, and as Dignan so poignantly stated, "I'm not always as confident as I look." None of us are.

Well, perhaps, even with all of his failings, excluding this man.?
