Phil Miller's Big Ten Football Insider: Opening with a bang

Brady Hoke swears he's happy about his Wolverines opening the season against the defending national champions. Of course, the game with Alabama was scheduled before he was hired as Michigan's head coach, so what else can he say?

"We like it, and I like it personally," Hoke said earlier this week. "When you want to be the best, and you want to be champions, you need to play the best. Play the programs that are on a high level."

Trouble is, that isn't a habit in the Big Ten, and it certainly isn't the norm on opening weekend, when cautious coaches would schedule junior college teams if they were allowed to. But this year is different. This year, a couple of Big Ten title contenders, a couple of teams with serious ambitions about the BCS (and some pleasant daydreams about a national championship game) have decided to gamble with their reputations before they're even sure their uniforms fit.

Michigan State and its ferocious defense faces a serious challenge from the offensive savants of 24th-ranked Boise State on Friday night, followed a day later by the Cowboy Classic in Arlington, pitting Hoke's Wolverines against Alabama. It's the biggest, most dangerous-yet-potentially-rewarding opening weekend in more than a decade for the Big Ten.

Programs on a high level? Indeed. You can't get much higher than the Crimson Tide, which has won two national championships in the past three seasons and is ranked No. 2 entering the 2012 season. And Hoke, coming off an 11-2 debut season in Ann Arbor and a Sugar Bowl victory over Georgia, has the Wolverines ranked eighth already. That sets up the most anticipated regular-season game involving a Big Ten team since No. 1 Ohio State beat No. 2 Texas 24-7 in Austin in 2006.

Those were the days before SEC domination, when the Big Ten -- or at least the juggernauts of the Big Ten -- were perceived as equal to or better than the powerhouses of the South. But those days are gone, thanks to five consecutive national championships won along the Gulf Coast, and the Big Ten's lingering New Year's Day hangover.

That's why this weekend could mean so much from Lincoln to Happy Valley. Scandal at Ohio State and especially Penn State has damaged the league's reputation for integrity, and a string of bowl disappointments -- 4-6 last year, 2-5 the year before, and a 1-8 Rose Bowl record since 2001 -- has hurt its standing as a football power.

The coaches would like to change that.

"We're all in this together, so to speak," Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said. "You like to see the league's teams have success [nationally] because you know you get a chance to beat those teams every year."

Still, Michigan State's Mark Dantonio doesn't feel the weight of 11 other teams on his shoulders as he prepares for the Broncos on Friday. He's got too much else to do to get ready.

"We as a group will stand together at the end of the day," he said. "We're not going out there representing the Big Ten Conference, as much as putting on the green and white and representing Michigan State."

Bernanke lifts Wall Street, keeps stimulus in play

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks rose on Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, expressing "grave concern" for the stagnating U.S. job market, said the central bank was prepared to take further steps to strengthen the economy if necessary.

Though Bernanke, speaking in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, dashed some hopes for a signal of quick action, his comments bolstered bets that the central bank was closer to providing more stimulus for an economy that is close to stalling.

Stocks had been flat for much of the week ahead of Bernanke's speech, though expectations of additional stimulus from the Fed helped the market this month. All three indexes posted gains for August.

"I think the debate is how strong growth is and how aggressive the Fed is going to be," said Giri Cherukuri, head trader at OakBrook Investments LLC, in Lisle, Illinois.

"Hopefully the economy will just get better on its own, but I think the Fed is saying they're going to be there and is trying to tell the market that they have some power to help things along."

Energy and materials shares were among the best performers, with the S&P energy index up 0.9 percent and the S&P materials index up 1.1 percent.

The Fed's next policy meeting is in mid-September, and many analysts are looking to it for a decision on a third round of quantitative easing.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 90.13 points, or 0.69 percent, at 13,090.84. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 7.10 points, or 0.51 percent, at 1,406.58. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 18.25 points, or 0.60 percent, at 3,066.96.

Even with the advance, each of the major indexes posted a second straight weekly decline. The Dow was down 0.5 percent for the week, while the S&P 500 was down 0.3 percent and the Nasdaq was down 0.1 percent.

For the month, the Dow rose 0.6 percent, the S&P 500 gained 2 percent and the Nasdaq climbed 4.3 percent, its best monthly performance since February.

Volume was light but above the low levels of earlier in week. The four other days this week were among the five lowest for volume all year.

The day's volume traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the Amex, was about 5.3 billion shares. The year-to-date average is about 6.6 billion.

Investors are looking ahead to the European Central Bank meeting on Thursday that is expected to take pressure off highly indebted countries. Comments from ECB Executive Board member Benoit Coeure rekindled expectations for central bank action.

Among the day's best performing stocks, SAIC Inc was up 3.4 percent at $12.21 after the computer contractor reported a drop in second-quarter profit and said it would split its business into two independent public companies.

On the data front, consumer sentiment climbed more than expected to a three-month high, while the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago's index of Midwest business activity fell in August to 53.0 from 53.7 in July.

Advancers outpaced decliners on the NYSE by about 5 to 2 and on the Nasdaq by about 5 to 3.

U.S. increases drug monitoring in Guatemalan, Honduran waters: official

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - The United States military is ramping up anti-drug trafficking efforts in Guatemalan and Honduran waters to keep up with shifting smuggling routes, a top U.S. military official told Reuters on Wednesday.

Gen. Douglas Fraser, head of the U.S. military's Southern Command, said that the coasts along the two Central American countries are top transit spots for South American cocaine destined for the United States.

"Key arrival points in Central America are the northeast coast of Honduras and then the Pacific coast of Guatemala," Fraser said. "We changed our strategy to be more persistent ... to see if we could have a bigger impact on trafficking organizations."

U.S. Southern Command, based in Doral, Florida, and responsible for coordinating military operations in Latin American and the Caribbean, sent 171 Marines and four helicopters to Guatemala this month as part of Operation Martillo.

The operation is part of a strategy to boost seizures in Central American waters, where small, fast boats and submarines transport about 500 tons of cocaine to the United States annually.

The United States estimates that 90 percent of South American cocaine heading to the United States passes through Central America and attributes a rise in violent crime in the region to transnational drug smugglers.

Trafficking routes have shifted in recent years as governments crack down on smugglers, forcing security teams to adapt.

"These criminal organizations will continue to shift their operations and we will have to shift ours," Fraser said. "As we put pressure along their routes, they will be making some changes, but we don't know what those will be."

Fraser arrived in Guatemala Tuesday and held a meeting with Guatemalan President Otto Perez. On Wednesday, he is scheduled to visit military bases where U.S. Marines have been stationed.

Perez, a retired general who served during the country's brutal 36-year civil war, took office in January promising a crackdown on violent crime in the tiny Central American nation, plagued by bloody street gangs and powerful drug cartels.

UN chief to see Iran leaders ahead of summit

UN chief Ban Ki-moon was to meet Iran's top leaders in Tehran on Wednesday on a visit hailed by the Islamic republic as a diplomatic coup over arch-foes the United States and Israel.

But Ban, who was to go on to attend a summit of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) states on Thursday and Friday in Tehran, was said to be determined to use his trip to call for Iran to take "urgent" action over its disputed nuclear drive and its human rights record.

He will raise the "clear concerns and expectations of the international community" regarding "Iran's nuclear programme, terrorism, human rights and the crisis in Syria," a UN spokesman said.

Ban was to meet Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili later Wednesday, Iranian media said.

Although the UN secretary general is a regular attendee at NAM summits -- which gather 120 developing nations accounting for nearly two-thirds of the UN member states -- this year both the United States and Israel criticised his presence.

The US State Department said such a visit "sends a very strange signal with regard to support for the international order," stressing that Iran was "in violation of so many of its international obligations and posing a threat to neighbours."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this month told Ban he would be making "a big mistake" if he attended.

With Ban's announcement that he was going regardless, Iran seized on his visit as a victory over its enemies and a sign it was not so internationally isolated as the United States has portrayed it.

Overeager Iranian government officials and state media jumped the gun by saying Ban had arrived in Tehran more than two hours earlier than he actually did.

State television showed Ban being greeted effusively by Iranian officials waiting for him on the red carpet leading up to his UN plane.

Iran is engaged in a deepening showdown with the United States and the rest of the UN Security Council over its disputed nuclear programme. It has also been threatened with possible air strikes on its nuclear facilities by Israel.

The West fears the programme is aimed at developing a nuclear weapons break-out capability. Iran denies that, saying its atomic activities are exclusively peaceful.

The UN's nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, is expected to release its latest report on Iran's nuclear programme this week -- perhaps concurrently with the NAM summit.

The report is likely to highlight Iran's expanding uranium enrichment activities -- which the UN Security Council has repeatedly demanded be suspended -- as well as Tehran's refusal to allow IAEA inspectors into a military site, Parchin, suspected of hosting explosives tests for nuclear warhead designs.

Social Media for Entertainers ? Writing a Book: Structure is Key

Writing can be fun. However, not only do you want to enjoy what you write, your readers should too. But for this to happen, you have to ensure that the structure is aligned so that readers can comprehend the message you are trying to convey. Here are 5 steps to structuring your writing.

Make a decision

Settle on what it is you would like to write. Is it a blog, short story or article? Once this is clear to you then you can take the additional steps to set up your writing in an understandable manner. Be sure of what you want to do and do it. Allow your creative juices to flow.

What is your Message?

What is it that you want your readers to walk away with after reading what you wrote? What was your goal? By knowing your goal it will assist you in how you write. Set the tone and allow readers to understand where you are coming from.

Get to the point!

Always make your point in the very beginning. This will keep your readers interested. Typically the opening statement includes what the entire writing is about. The remainder of the piece is simply to explain in further detail and to include all the details.

Keep it flowing

The most frustrating thing for a reader is when you are not sure where your writer is going. You want to follow but find it difficult and find yourself confused. You want your reader to be able to comprehend the message, tone and even purpose of your writing from beginning to end.

End strong

Just the same as your opening sentence, your conclusion has to be strong too. It should give a brief synopsis of your writing tying everything together.

Be Blessed, Be Heard and Be Present! Until next time?

Japan toilet maker unveils 'poop-powered' motorbike

Japan's best-known toilet maker on Wednesday unveiled a "poop-powered" motorcycle that can travel as far as 300 kilometres (180 miles) on a tank filled with animal waste.

Billed as the world's first waste-powered vehicle, the three-wheeler has a toilet in place of a regular seat and huge paper roll at the back.

But as a young female model climbed aboard for a test drive Wednesday, toilet giant TOTO was quick to point out that she would not supply the "gas".

"The biogas it uses as fuel is not made from human waste. It's made from livestock waste and sewage," Kenji Fujita, a company spokesman, told reporters in a Tokyo suburb.

"We hope to raise awareness among customers about our green campaign through development of environmentally-friendly products such as water-saving showerheads and water-saving toilets," Fujita added.

The company -- which makes toilets equipped with an array of features including heated seats, water jets with pressure and temperature controls, and ambient background music -- has no plans to commercialise the motorcycle.

Insufficient Funding Is Biggest Barrier to Workplace Safety ? ? OHS ...

August 28th, 2012

A safety coordinator can have the best, most innovative safety programs in mind. But without the money to implement those programs, they may never see the light of day?and workplace safety may suffer as a result.

Lack of money seems to be a common problem for safety professionals. When we recently asked what the biggest barrier was to a safer workplace, you said:

  • Insufficient funding (43%)
  • Lack of leadership (34%)
  • Lack of time (11%)
  • Lack of training (5%).

Insufficient funding and lack of leadership are connected. After all, if your company?s senior management doesn?t believe that workplace safety is a priority and thus doesn?t lead the way on safety initiatives, they?re also unlikely to give the OHS program the money it needs to be fully effective.

So how do you make the business case for safety and convince senior management that investing in the OHS program will not only protect workers but also benefit the company financially?

Romney to fly early to Republican convention

Mitt Romney is set to fly to Florida on Tuesday, two days earlier than expected, as he seeks to prevent Tropical Storm Isaac from overshadowing his coronation as the Republican presidential nominee.

In a surprise announcement, aides confirmed only that Romney would be in Tampa, but the expectation is that he will attend the convention as his wife Ann gives the primetime speech on the storm-delayed opening night.

"She's going to do terrific," Romney told reporters in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire as they emerged from a preparation session.

"I like my speech. I really like Ann's speech. Our sons are already in Tampa and they say it's terrific there, a lot of great friends, and we're looking forward to a great convention," the White House hopeful said.

What was scripted as a raucous beginning to four days of choreographed political theater opened with a whimper on Monday as Isaac, poised to become a hurricane over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, hogged the spotlight.

Forecasts put the storm on a direct path to hit New Orleans late on Tuesday, seven years almost to the day after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city and killed 1,800 people in one of the country's worst-ever natural disasters.

In Tampa, Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus declared a recess to a largely empty hall less than two minutes after opening proceedings, saying thoughts and prayers must be with the people of the Gulf Coast.

Thousands of jubilant delegates were to formally nominate Romney to take on President Barack Obama in the November 6 election. That roll call will now take place on Tuesday afternoon, possibly with Romney in attendance.

Lying neck-and-neck with Obama in the polls 10 weeks before an election that should have been his for the taking given the sour economic times, Romney hopes to use the event to boost his image and win over undecided voters.

Many Americans do not tune in until the convention season starts -- Obama and the Democrats hold theirs next week in Charlotte, North Carolina -- so Tampa provides Romney with a golden opportunity to reintroduce himself.

"For the Romney folks this is a chance to speak to a lot of voters who have only paid casual attention so far and will tune in to his keynote address on Thursday," Charles Franklin, politics professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, told AFP.

"Some will be looking for the first time, others will be reconsidering and open to some change," he said.

The run-up to the convention was marred by incendiary remarks from Todd Akin, a Republican congressman seeking a Senate seat in Missouri, who suggested women's bodies spontaneously prevent pregnancy after a "legitimate rape."

The Romney camp -- which roundly condemned the remarks -- is anxious to get back on message, pressing the case that the former Massachusetts governor and successful businessman understands the economy better than Obama and knows how to get the country back on track.

Ann Romney's speech will try to boost his likability by highlighting his human side, while former Olympians will take to the floor on Thursday to remind Americans that he saved the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics from bankruptcy.

But the storm could still cast a pall over Romney's big moment, and he must tread a fine line between promoting his political ambitions and showing sensitivity to those in harm's way.

"In purely political terms, there is a lot competing for news attention, the convention versus this hurricane," said Diane Heith, associate professor of politics at Saint John's University in New York.

"The more significant the weather event, the harder it will be for Romney to get out the message the Republican party planned."

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who was due to speak at the convention, was forced to stay home and prepare for disaster, while vice presidential pick Paul Ryan delayed his arrival in Tampa until Tuesday because of the storm.

Romney aides promised the show would go on largely as planned after they frantically repackaged four days of events into three.

Party officials stress that the main night-time speaking slots on Tuesday and Wednesday -- culminating in Romney's acceptance speech on Thursday after an introduction by rising Hispanic star Marco Rubio -- remain unchanged.

Obama will break with tradition and campaign hard through the event, countering Romney's bid to grab an uninterrupted chance to make his case to voters.

National polls have shown a close race between the rivals for weeks. A Washington Post and ABC News poll out Monday showed Romney one point ahead, 47 percent to 46 percent.

Other surveys show Obama leading in some of the most important swing states that could decide the election.

Romanian Crisis Erodes Ruling Party's Popularity :: Balkan Insight

Romania's centre-left government is expected to win around 54 per cent of the vote in a general election, down from its earlier ratings of 63 per cent in a July poll, a survey conducted by pollster IRES showed on Sunday.

The impeachment referendum against President Traian Basescu has damaged popular support for Victor Ponta's ruling Social Liberal Union, USL, the poll suggests.

Although most voters in the referendum on July 29 backed impeaching the President, the turnout was only around 46 per cent. Of approximately 8.3 million people who voted, around 87 per cent were in favour of impeaching the President.

On the other hand, the opposition Liberal Democratic Party, PDL, would get 23 per cent of the vote, up from 18 per cent last month, the same survey showed.

The PDL, with which Basescu has close links, lost most of its support due to its pursuit of some unpopular economic measures in the last two years, when the party was in power, including cuts in public sector pay and an increase in VAT.

In July 2010, the government cut civil servants' wages by 25 per cent, while thousands of state jobs were axed and VAT was increased by 5 per cent to 24 per cent.

The party of populist Dan Diaconescu ? a media mogul who wants deep tax cuts and higher wages and pensions ? came third in the poll with around 10 per cent of the vote.

Romania is to organize crucial parliamentary election by the end of the year.

By a majority of six votes to three, the judges of the Constitutional Court decided that the referendum on the President's future was not valid because turnout did not meet the required threshold of 50 per cent. The decision opens the way for President Basescu to return to his duties.

The Constitutional Court revealed its decision after weeks of study of all the relevant data related to the referendum on the President?s impeachment.

Basescu was previously suspended in 2007 for one month, but returned to power following a popular referendum.

European Union officials have expressed considerable disquiet over the campaign to remove the President, questioning the government's commitment to the rule of law and democracy.

Bucharest depends on a 20-billion-euro rescue package from the IMF, the European Union and the World Bank. It obtained the loan in May 2009 in exchange for agreeing to push through austerity measures aimed at taming the country?s yawning deficit.

The centre-right party won just 13 per cent of votes in the June 10 local elections, well down on its 33 per cent showing in the elections in 2008. The ruling Social Liberal Union, USL, got around 51 per cent in the elections.

Minnie Driver added to "Stage Fright" cast

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Minnie Driver has been added to the cast of Serendipity Point Films' horror-musical, "Stage Fright," the company announced on Monday.

The British actress joins Marvin "Meat Loaf" Aday, Allie MacDonald and Douglas Smith in the production. Jerome Sable ("The Legend of Beaver Dam") will direct from his own script. Sable also composed the music and co-wrote the lyrics with Eli Batalion.

The film will begin shooting on September 6 in Canada.

"Stage Fright" tells the story of a posh musical theater camp terrorized by a killer who hates musicals. Driver plays Kylie Swanson, a haunted star of the Broadway stage and mother of two siblings who find themselves at the center of the unfolding horror at the camp. Meat Loaf plays Roger McCall, a slumming Broadway producer-turned-camp director.

"It's a real thrill to have Minnie and Meat Loaf join our talented cast of singers and actors as we bring this horror-musical to life," Sable said. "I couldn't be more excited."

"Stage Fright" is a Serendipity Point Films production with Ari Lantos and Jonas Bell Pasht ("You Might as Well Live") producing. Mark Musselman ("Being Julia," "Barney's Version") will executive produce. eOne Films has acquired Canadian rights, and Celluloid Nightmares is handling international sales.

British police call off search for supposed lion

(AP) ? So, were the locals lying about the lion?

Police said Monday that they've found no evidence to support area residents' claims that they'd spotted a big cat prowling the countryside near the idyllic village of St. Osyth, in the southeastern English county of Essex.

Sunday's reported sightings alarmed many of the village's 4,000 people, and authorities sent about 40 officers, tranquilizer-toting zoo experts, and a pair of heat-seeking helicopters to the area in an effort to find the beast.

But a police spokeswoman said that, after an extensive search, "we've found no evidence" of a lion. The creature spotted Sunday night may have been a large domestic cat or a wildcat, she added.

So does that mean there never was any lion?

The official, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity, demurred, noting that the people interviewed by police were convinced they'd spotted a lion. That aside, she said, "we've stopped searching for it."

It seems the mysterious "Essex Lion" will join a number of other mythical beasts that at times appear and then disappear into Britain's forests and seaside ? particularly in the dead of summer, when journalists struggle to fill papers and news bulletins.

In 2011, there was the Hampshire White Tiger, whose alleged appearance near a sports field stopped a cricket game and led to a police alert (the tiger turned out to be a stuffed toy). And in 2007, the British media went wild over a man who claimed to have photographed a great white shark off the coast of Cornwall, in southwestern England.

The man, a bouncer, later admitted that the pictures were actually taken while on vacation in South Africa, adding that he couldn't believe anyone had been foolish enough to take the hoax seriously.

recipe, food recipes, different food recipes: Easy Summer Crock Pot ...

Summer is a great time for crock pot recipes. It may be hot and humid outside, but you still may need to be dinner for you and your family. You will not find a steak every day. The weather will not be given. Sandwiches and salads can be delicious, but sometimes you want a hearty meal at the end of the day. When I come home from work, I do not want to come home with a sandwich. I was already lunch time. Ordering out is nice every once in a while, but that can get expensive really quickly, especially if you have a large family. Crock pot cooking, however, you have your whole house without heating up the oven dinner for just about anything you can. With you in mind that I present some simple summer recipe for crock pot and try to.

N.Korea's Kim threatens war over S.Korea-US drill

North Korea's leader has warned of an "all-out" war against the South while denouncing its ongoing joint military drill with the United States, state media said Sunday.

The US and South Korean militaries on Monday began a two-week exercise aimed at testing defences against the communist North, insisting it was defensive in nature but Pyongyang called it a drill for a preemptive nuclear attack.

More than 30,000 US troops, including most of those based in the South plus 3,000 from overseas, are taking part in the annual joint drill known as Ulchi Freedom Guardian.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un called the drill a grave threat and said his army was ready to deal "deadly blows" if their territory was violated during the exercise.

"If the enemies fire even a single shell on our inviolable territory... the whole army should turn out as one and lead the battle to an all-out counter-offensive," said the leader, according to KCNA news agency.

The courageous officers... are now waiting for a final order for charge for a life-and-death battle against the enemies," Kim was quoted as saying in a speech to army officials Saturday. "There is a limit to our patience."

Kim, believed to be in his late 20s, took over the impoverished but nuclear-armed nation after his late father and longtime ruler Kim Jong-Il died last December.

On the eve of the ongoing drill, the young leader visited a frontliner artillery unit that carried out a deadly 2010 bombardment of a South Korean island near the disputed western sea border.

Kim praised its personnel as heroes and told them never to tolerate enemy aggression.

The two Koreas have remained technically at war since their 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice, without a subsequent peace treaty.

Cross-border tensions have been high since the South accused the North of torpedoing one of its warships with the loss of 46 lives in March 2010.

The North angrily denied involvement but went on to shell the Yeonpyeong island in November of the same year, killing four South Koreans including two civilians.

Van Persie heroics marred by Rooney injury

Robin van Persie marked his first Manchester United start with a sublime goal, but his side's 3-2 victory over Fulham was marred by a nasty injury to Wayne Rooney that will sideline the England striker for four weeks.

Van Persie had little chance to contribute during a brief substitute appearance in United's lacklustre defeat at Everton on Monday, but took just 10 minutes to make his mark at Old Trafford with a brilliant half-volley to cancel out Damien Duff's opener.

Inspired by the ?24 million ($37.9 million) Dutch striker, United went on to secure their first win of the season.

But the result was overshadowed by Rooney's injury late in the second half, which left the England striker, who was stretchered off, with blood streaming from a deep gash in his thigh after he was caught by Hugo Rodallega.

Rooney was taken to hospital for treatment and United coach Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It was a very bad one. He has gone to hospital. It looks like he will be out for four weeks."

Fulham had stunned United when Irish winger Duff fired home from just inside the penalty area in the third minute.

But that brought a scintillating response from van Persie, who levelled with a blistering strike from Patrice Evra's cross.

Like van Persie, former Borussia Dortmund star Shinji Kagawa was making his first appearance at Old Trafford and he marked the occasion by tapping in his maiden United goal.

United defender Rafael da Silva added a third goal in the 41st minute before Nemanja Vidic's 64th-minute own goal gave Fulham a glimmer of hope.

While United are off the mark, it is Chelsea who are setting the early pace as the European champions cemented their position on top of the table with a 2-0 win against Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.

Roberto Di Matteo's side, who have recorded three successive victories, went ahead in the 22nd minute when Eden Hazard drilled home his first Chelsea goal from the penalty spot after a Vurnon Anita foul on Fernando Torres.

Spain striker Torres added the second goal himself, lashing in from Hazard's back-heel just before half-time.

Everton, often hampered by slow starts to the season, also maintained their 100 percent record with a 3-1 win over 10-man Aston Villa.

South Africa midfielder Steven Pienaar gave David Moyes' side the perfect start as he struck in the third minute at Villa Park.

Marouane Fellaini increased the lead with a 31st-minute header and Croatia striker Nikica Jelavic swept home a Leighton Baines cross just before half-time.

Villa defender Ciaran Clark earned a straight red card for a professional foul on Jelavic in the second half and Karim El Ahmadi's 74th-minute goal was little consolation for the hosts.

Andre Villas-Boas was denied a first win as Tottenham Hotspur manager as James Morrison's late goal secured a 1-1 draw for West Bromwich Albion at White Hart Lane.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto struck for Tottenham in the 74th minute with a deflected shot, but Steve Clarke's side levelled through Morrison in stoppage time.

"It is very important to get that first win but there are still 36 games ahead of us," Villas-Boas said. "We have one more point than we did this time last year."

Norwich City and QPR, both thrashed 5-0 last weekend, shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road.

Chris Hughton's side took the lead through Simeon Jackson's 11th-minute header, but QPR were level within nine minutes when Bobby Zamora converted the rebound after Djibril Cisse's penalty was saved by John Ruddy.

Wigan Athletic showed there is life after Victor Moses as the Latics won 2-0 at Southampton.

With Nigeria forward Moses having joined Chelsea on Friday, Wigan coach Roberto Martinez needed his other forwards to step up and Franco Di Santo rose to the challenge as the Argentine hammered a powerful shot into the roof of the net in the 51st minute.

Arouna Kone completed Wigan's victory with a fine solo effort in the 89th minute.

Sunderland's match against Reading was postponed less than 90 minutes before kick-off due to a waterlogged pitch at the Stadium of Light.

On Sunday, Arsenal travel to Stoke City and champions Manchester City take on Liverpool at Anfield.

From the Editor's Desk: Verdict fatigue; Motorola sends pigs into the air; how to really hate a device

Phil Nickinson

I'm supposed to take this more personally, I've been told. I'm supposed to hate Apple and what it's litigious self with every fiber of my being. I'm supposed to cry in my beer for Samsung, for HTC, for anyone who's ever had an injunction handed down. I'm suppose to hate the player, as well as the game.

That's just not me. I don't set my hair on fire, especially about things over which I have no control.

Here's what I do hate, in no particular order:

  • I hate that patent litigation has become the focus of the past several months. (It almost makes me long for the bad old, sky-is-falling days of Carrier IQ.)
  • I hate that instead of writing and talking about phones and tablets, we have to concentrate on lawsuits about phones and tablets.
  • I hate that it takes the focus away from the developers, without whom none of this would matter anyway.
  • Most of all, I hate that it's come this far.

That patents should be granted for software certainly should be debated. That patents are granted far too easily hardly is up for debate. Let's hope by this time next year we'll be talking about new and innovative products, and not this mess. I'm sick and tired of patents.

If you've yet to do so, check out the podcast I did with Rene Ritchie from iMore.com on Saturday.

And now, for some more good (and bad) from the past week in Android.

PR consultant: More Harry material may emerge soon

LONDON (AP) ? Brace yourself, Harry.

A prominent British public relations guru said Friday he'd been approached by two women who claimed to have more material on Prince Harry, raising the possibility that the world may soon be seeing more compromising images of the British royal.

Earlier this week, celebrity gossip website TMZ published photos of Harry romping in the nude during a party at his Las Vegas hotel suite. Many Britons have laughed off the 27-year-old prince's hijinks, but questions have been raised about his publicly-funded security detail.

In a telephone interview, publicist Max Clifford said he had been called by two American women who claim they were in the prince's hotel room in the U.S. last week. Clifford, a savvy operator famous for negotiating kiss-and-tell interviews, said the women "said they had lots of interesting things: pictures, video, that kind of thing."

He said he turned them down.

"I couldn't justify this," he said. "It's an infringement of his privacy. That's why I said no."

On Thursday, TMZ claimed that "several girls" had taken pictures at the party using their cellphones as the party got started and that "more photos were taken" after the clothes came off. Neither TMZ nor Clifford has made clear whether they believe the unreleased photographs show the prince in the nude.

British publications have largely steered clear of the photographs, with the prominent exception of Rupert Murdoch's The Sun tabloid, which became the first paper to splash the pictures across its front page on Friday with the words: "HEIR IT IS!" and marketing the grainy photograph as a "souvenir printed edition."

Britain's Press Complaints Commission said it has received more than 850 complaints about the naked pictures in the tabloid, mostly from members of the public. Nearly all of the complaints are about invasion of privacy and will be investigated, the commission added.

The paper said it had defied the wishes of the royal family because there was a public interest in knowing what the prince, who represented the queen at the 2012 Olympic Games and is heavily involved in charity work, got up to while abroad.

Privacy lawyer Chris Hutchings, a partner at Hamlins LLP, said the paper's public interest argument could have traction.

"The public interest argument is on the basis that Prince Harry represents this country around the world and the photos bring into question his suitability to act as a British ambassador," Hutchings said, although he added: "The Sun have taken a calculated risk in publishing the photos given their inherently private nature."

Royal officials said they had no further comment on the matter after previously saying that it was down to the editors of Britain's newspapers to decide whether they printed the controversial pictures.

As of Friday, the palace hasn't made any official complaint.

How To Use Podcast Directories To Promote Your Online Business

Here?s just another marketing method to get your teeth into. Podcasts I hear you say with trepidation, ?what are they, how do they work and how do I make them?? All valid questions and concerns but its like so many things relating to the internet that at first glace look pretty scary and the initial reaction is ?I can?t do that!? And sure this article just covers the opportunity in a brief way & you?ll need to do a bit more research, but honestly once you get your head around it ? you?ll wonder why you didn?t do it before, trust me and read on??

What?s a Podcast? A podcast is an internet channel used to communicate. It?s like a niche-specific radio station. Podcast directories are similar to article directories, but people subscribe to them. When you submit your podcasts here, they go out to all the directory?s subscribers.

The cool thing about podcast directories is that there?s a built-in audience who are already interested in your niche. You can use these directories to show your expertise, advertise your products or services, brand yourself and generate leads. If you do it right and offer high quality information, you?ll have a community of loyal listeners tuning in every week.

How To Create Podcasts

To make quality podcasts, all you need is a computer, a microphone and some type of recording software. Record your podcast and save it to MP3 format; now, it?s ready to submit.

You can use your articles or other web content as a script. Or you can use it as an outline and just talk about your topic. The important thing is just to offer quality information and make it valuable for your listeners.

Each directory has different submission rules, but most of them allow you to create a description. Optimize that for your keywords and make it something that will draw them in. Some directories work like social networking sites, so you can interact with other users and create communities and groups.

When you?re looking for directories to use, be sure to read their terms of use because each is different.

Tips For Creating Great Podcasts

To make a good podcast, all you really need to do is talk. That?s it. But, I?d recommend including some intro music and maybe outro music. This kind of brands your podcasts and also makes them smoother. It?s kind of abrupt when it just suddenly starts with somebody talking.

Once you?ve got your podcast action going, stick to your schedule and be consistent. Just like a radio show, podcasts are usually daily, weekly, or monthly. Before you even get started, decide on this schedule based on how committed you?re going to be. Your listeners will be expecting regular shows.

One great way to create excellent high-quality podcasts with little fuss and bother is to interview people in your niche. It?s a win-win situation ? interviewing a known name in your niche will get people tuning in to check out your podcast; and the person you?re interviewing gets some exposure and a chance to build their authority out of the deal.

Finally, market your podcasts. Let everybody know on your list, website and social media sites when the next show is going to be. Once you get started making podcasts, it?s a lot of fun!

And here?s a list of the best podcast directories to get you started:

Podcasting News? Podcast Directory ? www.podcastingnews.com/forum/links.php Podcast Alley ? www.podcastalley.com/ Odeo.com ? www.odeo.com iPodder.org ? www.ipodder.org/ PodcastPickle ? www.podcastpickle.com/ Digital Podcast ? www.digitalpodcast.com/ PodcastDirectory.com ? podcastdirectory.com/ iPodderX ? ipodderx.com/ Learn Out Loud ? www.learnoutloud.com/Podcast-Directory Public Radio Fan ? www.publicradiofan.com/podcasts.html

So there you are, get stuck and get podcasting, just another marketing avenue you really should be utilising, let us know how you get on?

Fujifilm X-E1 leaks into view oozing vintage cool

Fujifilm XE1

A Japanese site called Digicam Info has leaked pics of a previously unknown Fujifilm mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, the X-E1. The natty looking snapper bears a strong family resemblance to the X-Pro1 model, but looks to be flaunting a pop-up flash, and lacks the optical viewfinder of the flagship model. The sneaked pics show black and silver-topped models, as well as a previously announced lens, the 18-55 f/2.8-4.0 OIS zoom that has yet to hit the market. No other details, such as price, are available yet, but the model will likely slot behind the X-Pro1 and ahead of the X100 to fill out the retro-look X-family.
