Belmont Abbey To Open Nation's First College-Based Maternity Center

A first of its kind facility for pregnant college students is being built in Belmont.A ground breaking-ceremony was held Monday morning at Belmont Abbey College.
View Larger Map The 10,000-square-foot maternity and after-care facility will be the first in the nation.It will provide single, pregnant college women the care and support they need during their pregnancy while allowing them to continue with their education.The new facility will have two residential wings -- one for maternity and one for after-care -- that will be home to 15 mothers, 15 infants and eight toddlers for up to two years.Each mother will have a private bedroom and bathroom and share the kitchen, dining room and laundry room with other residents.?We wanted to also let them know we love them and we wanted to help them through this pregnancy,? said Diane Hoefling from St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church.The program will be free for the first two years.Women do not need to be students at the college to receive help and care.The facility will be run by Room In The Inn, which is a safe haven and source of hope for pregnant mothers and their children since 1994.For more information, please visit belmontabbeycollege.edu.
