Internet Killed The Yellow Page Ad: Promoting Your Business With ...

You may or may not remember the 1979 song by The Buggles, ?Video Killed The Radio Star,? but guess what is happening to the Yellow Pages advertising phenomenon of old? Internet advertising has all but killed the Yellow Page Ad. Online advertising is now the fastest, most effective way to promote your business. Are you promoting your business with online Social Media?

Undeniable facts:

The internet is changing the way we live our lives. It?s changing the way we communicate with each other, the way we shop, how we obtain music, how we watch t.v, how we look up phone numbers and addresses, and it is especially having an effect on the way we market and advertise to online consumers. There were more than 234 million websites on the World Wide Web at the end of 2009, with 47 million added in one year. Businesses are moving away from mainstream advertising and spending their dollars on internet marketing campaigns which include Social Media Marketing such as FaceBook, Twitter, and Youtube, just to name a few. Gone are the days of expensive newspaper and Yellow Pages advertising. Marketing dollars spent on websites and marketing those websites are more effective and reach millions more people than the old print ads.

The Death of the Yellow Pages:

In a recent Gallop Poll, 66% of small businesses said they had ?no interest? when asked about placing Yellow Page ads, and only 11% said they may try a yellow Page ad over the next 12 months.

New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Florida Public Utilities Commissions have given Verizon permission to stop delivering phone books.

Seattle recently passed legislation to create a Yellow Pages opt-out system, with San Francisco in the process of doing the same. There is a national yellow pages opt-out website coming online this year.

Another recent survey shows that almost 20% of businesses not currently using online, direct or social media marketing planned on doing so in the next 12 months.

So what does this mean to online advertising? Has internet really killed the Yellow Page Ad? Should you be promoting your business in Social Media marketing? In a nutshell: Yes!
