UN urges US, NKorea to avoid aid talk in Geneva (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea ? The U.N.'s top relief official says nuclear talks in Switzerland between the United States and North Korea should avoid discussions of humanitarian assistance for the chronically hungry Asian country.

U.N. Undersecretary-General Valerie Amos visited North Korea last week for five days.

The U.N. is urging countries to provide $218 million in emergency aid for North Korea. So far, much less than that has been pledged.

U.S. and North Korean diplomats began two days of talks Monday on the North's nuclear program.

Amos told reporters in Seoul that she is happy they are meeting. But she said it is "not appropriate" for them to discuss humanitarian aid which "must be kept separate from a political agenda."
