Golf: New cancer fight for Lyle

03/09/2012 05:20:57 AM

Australian professional golfer Jarrod Lyle has suffered a recurrence of leukaemia while preparing for the birth of his first child.

Diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia as a 17-year-old, Lyle fought his way back to fitness to fulfil his dream of playing on the US PGA Tour.

His condition had effectively been in remission for more than a decade, but a blood test for an insect bite at a recent tour event in Mexico revealed his leukaemia had returned.

The 30-year-old flew home to Australia last week to be with his wife Briony who was due to give birth to the couple's first child later this month.

The birth is now likely to be induced to allow Lyle to commence his treatment as soon as possible.

News of Lyle's setback was revealed by compatriot Robert Allenby who sponsors the Challenge Cancer support network that helped Lyle through his health issues as a teenager.

"My heart goes out to my mate, great golfer Jarrod Lyle," Allenby tweeted.

"New baby coming tomorrow and big fight at Cancer again!"

Lyle equalled his best finish on the PGA Tour last month when he tied for fifth at the Northern Trust Open at the Riviera Country Club.

Born in Shepparton in northern Victoria, Lyle turned professional in 2004.

He graduated from the Nationwide Tour to the PGA Tour in 2007, only to return to the secondary tour the following season.

Lyle regained his tour card in 2009 and has played the PGA Tour for the past three seasons.
