Guillermo del Toro Preps for Crimson Peak

We?re still months away from the release of Guillermo del Toro?s Pacific Rim, but the filmmaker is already lining up his next project and horror fans should definitely start getting excited.

Del Toro will next helm the ghost story Crimson Peak ? a modern fright film set to subvert classic genre staples while paying homage to some of the biggest horror films of all time in the process.

The film will be based on a script del Toro sold to Universal after making Pan?s Labyrinth. Other projects (Hellboy II and his flirtation with directing The Hobbit) conspired to delay the movie, but the director feels the time is right to return to his horror roots now that his mechs-vs.-giant-monsters movie is in the can. The one change is that the script is now set up at Legendary Pictures rather than Universal ? although Uni retains the right to invest in the project at?its discretion.

The Deadline article announcing the feature has del Toro comparing the script to the ?grand dames? of the haunted house subgenre, stating ?To me that is Robert Wise?s?The Haunting, which was a big movie, beautifully directed, with the house built magnificently. And the other grand daddy is Jack Clayton?s?The Innocents. I?ve always tried to make big-sized horror movies like the ones I grew up watching, films like?The Omen, The Exorcist?and?The Shining, the latter of which is another Mount Everest of the haunted house movie.?

He then adds, ?I think people are getting used to horror subjects done as found footage or B-value budgets. I wanted this to feel like a throwback.?

While this isn?t the horror project fans have been clamoring for (that would be del Toro?s axed version of HP Lovecraft?s At the Mountains of Madness), it turns out this film might pave the way to getting the Lovecraft adaptation off the ground. The director has high hopes that his partners at Legendary will help resurrect that movie in the not-too-distant future.

Del Toro had this to say in regards to?Madness,??They love it, but we just finished?Pacific Rim,? he said. ?They want to let that film happen [it opens July 12] and then my hope is, down the line we can do it."

Current plans are for primary production on Crimson Peak to begin in early 2014. That allows del Toro an opportunity to promote Pacific Rim and work on the pilot for his FX vampire series, The Strain.
